I'm guessing Bronco wasn't happy that he wasn't ready academically to start fall camp, so told him to get his grades up. He took that to mean, pass his summer classes and he'd be good to go. Bronco probably meant more. So he's gone.

Maybe Hine would be ready to go. This sucks, was really looking forward to seeing this kid play

IF that is what happened, I will be disappointed. IF he was eligible his schollie got pulled, not sure I like that precedent.

I have a feeling there is more to this story that we will never know.

Compare how O'Niell Chambers is responding and how Drew Phillips is responding.

I am completely impressed by what OC is doing. The guy is awesome. It's sad to see Drew go, but from what I can see he just wasn't up to par on his classwork. Being a student athlete is more than on the field performance. BYU has much stricter academic standards for their athletes than a lot of other schools. I wish Drew the best where ever he lands, and may he tear up the field unless he ends up playing against BYU.

So true. Bronco will be very prudent with any released statement. Probably be very generic: "We have appreciated associating with Drew, we wish him well, he is a fine young man, the world is his oyster, you da bomb."



I suspect that with Schollies very tight & Drew a big question mark (who know if he got his grades up) - the schollie could be better utilized elsewhere. Who knows - maybe Bronco has some solid stud they want to offer. Sorry - we need that schollie.



I'm sad to see Drew go - I had high expectations. Timo will probably be the better athlete anyway - those are my feelings based on nothing.

I'm guessing Bronco had told him what he needed to do and Drew probably thought he was closer than Bronco thought he was. Unfortunately, it's Bronco's opinion that matters more. Bronco expects a lot, Drew may have thought he couldn't do more so there's a mutual parting.

Too bad. Wish him well. I'm sure Bronco gave him every chance. We lost this one. We've won others on the fence--KVN, for example, could have gone this similar way.

Wasn't OC's initial response pretty reactive? Maybe I'm just remembering his drama of dumping all of heaps gear on coach's desk--if that really happened. OC certainly deserves credit now.

not to take away from what he is doing but what other choice did he have? if he were only a red shirt freshman i wonder if he made the same choice.



either way, i see no point in speculating. all it does is drag either him or the coaches through the mud. I am not happy at all. i wish he could come back but i am sure he is gone and he will go rip it up somewhere else. :angry: :angry: :angry: :angry:

this is a shame. Drew, along with kvn, were my favorite players. I was so excited to see him play. i am seriously bummed. wish him the best wherever he goes. I hope he finds a good home and does very well.



everything that i have heard i like from him. i am surprised this happened.

I will wait to hear the official story and actual outcome. I though Chambers was gone even though it would have been crazy for him to go. A lot of people assumed Davies was gone. BYU will give Philips every opportunity reasonable to succeed.

Um... Chambers is reacting like a total stud now. Pretty unfair to compare Chambers a year after the fact to Phillips in the moment.



Chambers was very reactionary, just in case you all forgot lockergate, etc etc.

Jay Drew had previously quoted Bronco as stating the following:



"Drew Phillips still has two classes, two grades, to become eligible," Mendenhall said at the time. "He is taking summer school. Most likely [he will join the team] the first day of school for him."

Safety Kori Gaines and defensive end Thomas Bryson were also singled out that day by Mendenhall as players who wouldn't be in fall camp but could possibly join the team the first day of classes, Aug. 29."



Reading this comment, it sounds like Bronco was expecting him to be on board by this date. Although we don't know the details yet, Bronco is a man of his word. Drew must have either not fulfilled these requirements, maybe had to prove that he valued his schollie and had it taken away until he showed he would treat it of great worth, or possibly was not going to be able to see much if the field until he got up to speed and couldn't accept these terms and conditions. I am sure Bronco's response will provide some measure of light.

Phillips, a freshman who redshirted last season, announced via Twitter Thursday night that the school has pulled his scholarship. While he later deleted that tweet, he subsequently reiterated several times that he won't be returning to play for the Cougars.



The Boaz, Ala., native has not been participating in fall camp due to academic reasons. Coach Bronco Mendenhall said in July, during the school's national media day, that Phillips would likely join the team on the first day of school, which is Aug. 29.

Playing at BYU requires a higher standard and a greater commitment. Some times kids read too many of their own press clippings and begin to feel like they actually are entitled to the rewards without the work. I don't know if this is the case with Phillips or not, but it is a good reality check for others on the team, they better not slack off academically if they want to stay on the team.



I guess we have an answer to which phantom talent will never make an impact on the field now.

With Gaines being friends with Phillips will he leave as well??
