Is this the Mendenhall D effect?

This is Wed report.

This ain't soundin good:



The offense struggled again with the passing game. Jake Heaps went just 1-for 5 for 17 yards on a completion to Dallin Cutler. ... Riley Nelson didn't get off a single pass during his series of reps as he was sacked twice. The first sack came from a combined effort of Austen Jorgensen and Jameson Frazier getting to him with Ezekial Ansah accounting for the other one.



Why? Is Jake reading his own press clippings too much? It happens every year to the qb.

I believe this could be Jake's achilles heel-inhaling all the praise and success--to date such as it is, long-term such as it may be.

I also think this is also indeed the D effect. With more talent this year, maybe the most under Bronco's tenure, matched with his work ethic, discipline and sceme, he unleashed The D just in time to humble the O and make them work harder/smarter. Work in progress. It'll come.

Coach has some crazy blitzes, he just doesn't call them as much as he used to. That was at last partially due to the secondary strength. I expect to see some of that return because of the depth at corner.

Good thing we don't have any press clipping of Riley expressing total support for Jake and how great of a QB he is!

Go ahead, I deserve that. :-)



The other thought is that Bronco copmmented relative to fewer open practices next year is not showing too many plays. Makes me wonder if in the open practices to public or the media, Bronco has kept the O playbook limited and thus the defense has started to recognize and better defend the limited playbook.

Just a question. With all the "Heaps if full of himself/Nelson is full of himself, everyone else is full of themselves" garbage you are talking, do you have anything to back that up?



How exactly are these specific players showing that they are full of themselves?

I could see that. Maybe having the fans there - who are usually cheering for the offense - is proving too much of a distraction for them and it's taking Bronco a few days once the public is gone to refocus the O.

The point was, as Bronco said, you don't know who is in attendance from other teams. So why open the playbook--which then means they only run basic plays which is easier to predict by the defense.

Dick Harmon just made a good point on his twitter "Quick whistle touch sacks are great for defense." The defense gets the benefit of the doubt every time there's close-to contact with the QBs. Also, you have to crawl before you walk before you run, meaning that Doman's offense needs to get the fundamental plays down first before he can really open it up and get more variety in there.

Pointing out an obviously flawed bias isn't "tearing someone down."

Attacking as usual Blue. Did I somehow cause this latest attack on me when I haven't even posted on this thread.



Back on topic - word on Heaps this year is that the entitlement issues are in the past. Of course that word was a week ago. DM may simply have said that the past tendency to be a bit full of himself could have reappeared after putting up gaudy numbers the first several practices. I am not saying they have reappeared or that they have not. My theory is that this particular boat has a harder time rising when very good defensive pressure is applied and gets a bit jittery and less precise with his throws. If so, it is good that the BYU D is good enough to bring that pressure as it will help Jake improve from said experience.



If you want evidence that some players feel Jake acted a little entitled last year, before he started working harder, look no further than the DiLuigi quote on that topic earlier this week. But, that comment was about 2010.



Anyway, I will post my complaint about being attacked for no reason and leave in Peace.
