ESPN/BYU TV Contract + Big 12

I posted this in another thread, but no one has responded and I think it deserves it's own thread.



Let's say that BYU was invited to the Big 12 and they accepted, would that affect their contract with ESPN? I don't know but maybe one of you does. I mean Texas has a contract with ESPN why couldn't BYU keep theirs with ESPN? BYU couldn't make a deal with ESPN while in the MWC because of the Mtn. I don't think they necessarily had to be independent to make the deal, but I could be wrong as I don't know everything about the contract.



Wouldn't ESPN's deal with BYU be more valuable if BYU were a member of the Big 12 than Independent? Wouldn't it be awesome to be a part of the Big 12 AND keep our TV deal with ESPN? Hopefully some of you can shed some light on this.

Yes, it would. The Big XII deal would supercede. Luckily, Big XII also has an ESPN deal so kinks could be ironed out easily.

It would be hard to beat our current TV deal without upsetting members of a new conference. As we saw with the MWC, people don't like it when BYU gets preferential treatment, even if BYU deserves it.

Why would the Big 12 want to add another team that wanted special status when it comes to TV contracts/revenue sharing?

All Big12 teams are allowed their own television outlet and they get one football home game per year (plus any others that aren't picked up by ESPN or Fox) and several home basketball games (and all of their minor sports games). My guess is that UT and OU set up their own channels and the rest of them combine to make a conference wide channel that teams can opt into.

Because the decision would have more to do with survival than who gets what.

BYU's deal is for all home and neutral games with ESPN. Joining the Big XII means those games now fall under that contract. ESPN and Fox own those rights, and they were collectively agreed to. A condition to BYU entering would be to enter into that agreement. Pretty simple. But it would also mean BYU would get their fair share of the cut as well. After 2014, could be upwards of $20-25 Million, which Indy can not touch.

So we're ND-lite and can show the real ND it can be done. I can go for that.

this is the best chance for the long term survival of the big12. they can be the conference but own your own tv rights conference.
