Just got back from the open practice.

The team looks hungry. Hungry and physical. Guys were outstanding. Couple of little fights and some coaches getting awfully angry (Brandon Doman). You can tell these guys are ready to tackle each other.

What stood out to you guys?

I liked how physical our CBs were. I liked our punters. Ansah will be very good. I thought he got into coverage well too.

A couple of interesting non-play related QB moments.

Alex Kuresa took down Jake Heaps who stayed on the ground for an uncomfortable amount of time, right before practice started. It looked like he was simulating dropping back and ran into Heaps who was walking behind him.

Riley Nelson dove head first into a brawl between offense and defensive players today to protect a wide receiver. It was kinda funny to watch him dive in with such ferocity.

Practice sessions had all the QBs looking pretty well today.

Another fun fact, Justin Sorensen has a golden foot. In fact, he has 2 golden feet... sporting the golden shoes. He also hit some mighty impressive field goals, at least one from 57 yards. Closer ones were also going over the trees and hitting cars in the parking lot.

Report I read said that BYU still has some option type packages in place for Riley when he is in. I was surprised by this, if true.

Don't know if was an option package, but yes, Riley did run that Oregon-style spread option play twice. I don't think either time was in actual live team sessions.

Nelson did come in on Lark's series and run a wild cougar/option play. Got a 10 or 12 yard gain out of it.

So I think it is obvious how BYU might use Riley this year now. Situational or mop up, and he has his own package of plays.

But Riley runs more than just his package.

I think our backup QBs are going to get lots of playing time at home games this year.

Looks like we believe in laying on of hands for the gift of ... Is playing well at camp. What's next, putting our shoulder to the ...

1,257 fans attended the first open practice and Bronco said that it was nice play in front of people. Crowd atmosphere apparently charged up the players.

Bronco giving kudos to DeQuan Everett:

- the guys are having a hard time shaking him - he keeps on staying in there

- he is one of the 3 being considered for BC - just has to make a few more plays

- he is settling in as he is recently married, did well in last academic semester

Confrontations:

1. Everett and Rhen Brown

2. OL and DL

Apparently Bronco says the feistiness is normal and healthy

Riley Nelson has been selected to be on a couple of special teams because of his aggressiveness, leadership and attitude. Percursor to move to safety????

Outside LBs: Pendleton, KVN, Frazier, Ansah - Fua developing Wagner still awaiting clearance

LBs: when Pendleton plays:

- Van Noy #1 WLB and Ansah #2

When Pendleton doesn't play, KVN is #1 SLB and Ziggy is #1 WLB

Ziggy is no longer is in the 2-deep at WLB no longer a situational pass rusher

Sorenson 6/9 FGs (49/2; 47;42;40;37; missed from: 57;37;30

Maybe we could think of it this way. Take the 2 or 3 50+ yard passing plays that Heaps has in his playbook and replace them with an option or wild cougar play. The other plays are the same for all the QBs.

Team looked good. I liked the fact that when Rhen brown and Everett got into it, the dbs backed each other and the receivers backed each other. The funny thing was it wasn't really Everett retaliation to brown hitting him in the chest, it was mees that really escalated the situation. How about uale knowing Wilson the f*** out. Doman was pissed. I like seeing these guys chippy, kvn looked massive.

I thought I heard the D yelling to the O that if they wanted to play some football, then let's play some football and go fully live.

Are today and tomorrow the last days to make big moves on the depth chart? Do things start solidifying tomorrow or is it still pretty fluid for another week or so?

Yes, one on Heaps accord to Wrubell.

Yeah, he went right around Reynolds and would have absolutely flattened Heaps.

On the next play, I saw him drop into the flat for coverage on the RB. We may have a player on our hands!

Holy smokes! That's flippin' impressive! I hope he can repeat that in a game. :bug:

The sack ziggy had was kind of misleading, they were setting up a screen so Reynolds let him get really far up field to open the flat. But dude can rush the edge hard.

I had a gut feeling all the effort w/ Ziggy was going to pay dividends. He is committed - smart & gifted. He is going to wreck Offenses. Ansah's speed & strength combined with Van Noy's speed & strength - look out! I'm serious - out LB corps is solid through & through!
