Texas A&M to join SEC

I realize this is only a Rivals site thus far and none of the major media outlets have reported anything, but this will cause some waves if it goes through.

I know we've discussed this in theory but now that it is looking likely to happen, does the SEC poach OU and OSU from the Big 12 now? Where does that leave the rest of the conference? Will BYU be involved somehow or does the conference simply collapse?

I'll believe it when it actually happens. But I'll be surprised if this goes down. aTm is posturing and trying to send a message to Texas.

Either Texas goes indy and it all falls apart, or they pick up BYU as a football-only and hold it together.

I'm behind on all news, but Dan Beebe is refusing to look at the truth. He WILL bring the conference down, not Texas or tamu by themselves. He's like the MTN/MWC. I don't like him and I don't like the quicksand idea of putting BYU in the mix.



I say we band with Texas, ND, Navy, AF, Army and form a Nonconference Independent Conference. NIC Like a nondenominational denomination church.

Would it get a BCS bid?

looks like the rumor is heating up.

perhaps the new nonconference independent conference could crown its own champion, pay its players, and hire Craig Thompson to wax our cars once he gets fired from the MWC (see also Biff)

Seems to be picking up steam. Possible that ou osu may go as well. Hope this ends up good for buy when all is said and done. At this point Indy looks better than big 12

I would choose this over any other option, but odds are stacked highly against it. PAC would first try to get Texas and TTech and okie and okie state. If Texas went Indy instead, BYU likely would stay Indy. It Texas and ND join together to form their own conference, they could get almost anyone they want from the region and call many shots in their favor re revenue sharing or lack of it. BYU might stand a better chance of getting an invite there. PAC only calls on BYU if they just can't think of anyone else. That could be the case if the Big 10 grabs mo, KU, etc. Then maybe PAC calls BYU as Utah objects.

Don't rule out the MWC as the winner or loser. They could end up with Baylor, k state, Iowa state, maybe MO or KU unless someone else wants them. Maybe BYU comes back if scheduling challenges persist late in the season. Maybe they grab USU and WAC is gone and Big 12 is gone and Big East and ACC chew up USA and anything else of interest, and Conf USA and MAC are gone. Then maybe the MWC gets included in the Big Time.



Or MWC is gone and Big 12 survives with best of MWC, Big 12 leftovers, USU, and stays BCS.



Unless Texas goes Indy, BYU better grab something if the dominoes start to fall. If SEC starts the turf war, egos in Texas, South Bend, and elsewhere or survival instincts will cause a ripple that is more like a Tidal Wave.

I have a hard time believing super conferences will ever form because too many teams come out losers every season, and that's tough on coaches and fan bases. So, I could see a new conference forming that excludes UT but keeps the other members that didn't jump to the SEC plus BYU or something like that.



Needless to say, UT has ticked off a lot of people with their new network arrangements.

MWC should have done this last year. They should have approached Missouri and Kansas when the PAC10 was still looking at Texas. They could have said Texas is gone. Don't get left out. Come join us. We've got Boise coming in and with BYU, Utah and TCU, we'll take the Big 12's auto bid when that conference dies and you guys won't be on the outside looking in. Oh, and we'll be an even strong bball conference than we are now.



Instead, the MWC sat around and watched and nearly died in the process of their indifference.

Having lived in Texas previously, I think A&M leaving does nothing to the Big XII. A&M is like the UU of Texas. They have a big enough following, but they do not carry the state. Clearly the #2 school in state, and in many respects, they are the school that gets made fun of the most by every other fan base in the state. Think Aggie jokes with several joke book additions. It is a fan base with a majority inferiority complex that thinks higher of themselves than their results allow them. Them leaving does nothing to the Big XII--unless--some other big schools goes with them, like OU. Has to be a second domino. If they are the only one, that league can improve itself.



IF the Big XII is serious about self preservation, they need to use this to shore up their conference. Let A&M leave, then be proactive and invite 3 new schools to the league and get back to 12 teams. I know Beebe is no Larry Scott, but he needs to follow his lead.



If it were me, I go after 3 schools in large markets--with 2 in new emerging markets. School #1 is BYU. The SLC-Provo market is growing, and BYU still is the dominant force in the marketplace. Sunday place is a minor practical issue. School #2 is Louisville. Louisville is also a growing market similar in size to SLC. It also hurts the Big East, so all the better. Team #3 is the tricky one. I am inclined to say TCU, simply because they are in Texas and if the Big XII goes to 6 team divisions, they need another Texas school for the South, and TCU has a solid football program and facilities, and they make a travel partner for TTech for all other sports, while Texas and Baylor could pair up. If not TCU, then go after Memphis(if Fed Ex ponies up $$$ as rumored) or AFA.



If the Big XII sits on its hiney while all of this happens around them, shows their league is run really poorly. They need to be proactive--and quickly.

Uh, they did. They wouldn't go for it.

And A&M, FSU, and Clemson are in. I don't know about Mizzou yet but they'd be crazy to pass it up while the walls are collapsing in the midwest.

Uh, they did. They wouldn't go for it.

The MWC approached Missouri and Kansas last year and tried to blow up the Big 12? That's news to me. If they had done this, they could have potentially added the Broncos, Jayhawks and Tigers and wouldn't have then lost the Utes, Cougars and Horned Frogs.

I think the Big 12 collapses, the Pac-12 picks up a few, the SEC picks up a few, and the MWC gets what's left over.



All of the sudden there's a BCS vaccuum with only 5 conferences, putting even more momentum to a semi-strong MWC AQ bid



That's what I see happening.

As long as OU and UT stick around the Big 12 will survive.
