and I don't mean on mortgages. It's The "Academic Progress Rate" the NCAA has started using.

If I'm reading this right, our 4-year average football APR score is 929. That currently falls below the new higher standard set by the NCAA of 930 for teams wishing to participate in the post-season.

I don't see us on the NCAA hit list here:

but looks like our score from last year 09-10 was an abysmal 898. All of the sudden Bronco's grade requirement standard with incoming recruits makes a bit more sense. We're not cutting it and at this rate, it'll hurt us in the post-season.

I don't know the details exactly but I understand that the two year mission is what hurts our scores...if you factored in the missions (or factored it out--not sure how it should be worded) then BYU's score for the FB team would be significantly higher. The gone for two year looks like they "dropped out" or something like that so it hurts.

A mission and a redshirt puts some of these kids at 7 years to graduate. That puts them outside of the time period the NCAA measures and they count as drop outs.

We always had more academic all-conference players than the rest of the MWC combined, maybe now that we're independent we'll have to come up with some other way to show that BYU players' academic performance isn't adequately described by the NCAA's one-size-fits all algorithm/formula.

so perhaps the reason our 4 year scores are dropping has to do with the increased number of RM's that Bronco is bringing on board. Funny. utah's scores are still really high.

Easy school or no Rm's?

Both.

I wonder if they leave on their mission first and come back if they count as 4 years or 6? It really is not fair.

If you leave first your clock doesn't start. I don't get how the NCAA can't allow for missions to NOT be taken into account. And the APR should include a comparison to school's non-athlete graduation percentage.

It's an extremely poor statistic that is being poorly applied and takes no account of actual factors.

Maybe the church should allow an exception for football players to leave right out of high school to help the APR.

If BYU ever gets punished, the school should sue.

I second that thought. Our team academic achievements are much better then most other schools.

I wanted to ressurrect this thread. There is some concern abouot BYU not using all of their practices and not really starting bowl prep until next Monday.

Maybe, Bronco needs his guys to focus on academics right now. Finals are this week. If BYU falls too far below the APR, they're in BIG trouble - like loss of scholarships and no post-season play trouble.

Perhaps Bronco is hoping to improve the team's APR so there can be a bowl game next year.

We can still get in 5-8 practices next week before Christmas. And 2-3 the week before the bowl game. We'll be okay.

I'll gladly trade a few practices now for a bowl game next year. We can't fall below the APR.

That's what I was wondering about too.

someone send a note to Drew and ask him to look into this for us. Seems like a great journalism project especially since the team was obviously not prepared this year after dropping practices.

I think he should have a practice Friday night and Saturday. finals will be done and he can then squeeze a couple more in. He could even do two a day for just the 3rd and 4th string players. Why waste available practices.

I agree. I think there are ways to squeeze in some practices. No reason they couldn't do a walkthrough Friday evening. A full practice on Saturday. Come back Monday the 19th, and get in 7 or 8 practices before sending everyone home Friday afternoon/Saturday morning for Christmas. Everyone is back on Monday. You have a full practice or two on Tuesday the 27th.

Then you head to the bowl for bowl activities and another walk through or two.

BYU could easily get in 10-12 practices instead of the 5-8 they likely will.

The focus should fully - and rightfully - be on finals and getting the proper grades. But I think the team could do more to prepare for the bowl.

APR and grades are not the same thing. APR is about graduating players.

It also doesn't help that players leave the program at an alarming rate. With the missions, it is extremely important to keep the players you sign (this isn't just a Heaps thing, since it has been happening for years under Bronco) all the way to graduation, and maybe more importantly, those that don't serve missions or aren't LDS.

Ok, I'll take the bait. What number of players leaving per year constitutes an alarming rate? Ok, now what is the average rate of 1)Top 25 rated programs, 2) All D1 Programs, and 3) BYU under Lavell Edwards. I thought so.

2011 can't count OC - that was last year. Jake Heaps, Drew, I forgot to do my homework, Philips, DL that can't do HW - oh that's right he was able to get reinstated. All of Manti Teo's relatives - that was last year or prior.

Anyway exactly what player loss is stuck in your craw. If it is Heaps - get over it. If it is Philips - get over that one too. If it is OC - Bronco is performing a miracle in his life - get over that. If it is a really tall DL player that blocked a kick in a big win, Bronco salvaged that one.

Is it the big kid from Texas that struggled academically and got homesick. One of Heap's recruits iirc. Part of a package deal that didn't work. Might have been Apo's friend. Stuff happens. Tough to fit into Provo culture. Get over it.

When student athletes actually are required to attend class and do their work, there will be casualties.

But as for players pouting and leaving for PT or greener pastures - we seem to have Jake Heaps and no one else. Where is your beef if it ain't Heaps?
