I knew bits and pieces, but I didn't know the whole story--

It's so sad that Ty is having to go through all this.

The worst part about scams is that you can only be taken in by someone you trust. I think that deception hurts worse than the money you lose, even if it is 2 million bucks.



How well do those Texas HS coaching jobs pay anyways?

Wow. Had no idea it was that bad for him either. Sucks and I hope he rebounds.

So true. Makes me think of how much it must have hurt Brother Joseph when his friends turned on him.

He's at a private school, so I can't say for sure, but the head coaches at the two 5A schools in our school district make close to if not six figures by the time you add in their stipends and perks.



I don't know how y'all would feel about doing this, but I looked up Ty's e-mail address at his work and shot him a quick note of encouragement. It may not mean much coming from a total stranger, but it was sincere. It's hard to believe he won't come through this just fine. Who can forget watching him fight through busted chins, dislocated shoulders, etc???

I wonder how much more money the guy took from members of his ward/stake. It mentions that Ty met this person through the church. This is not the only story of this type of thing happening between church members.



The sad thing is, this is something that happens in a lot of churches, not just LDS ones. It's sad to realize what a lot of people will do for the love of money.



I think it's safe to say that while the Detmer family has had to give up a lot, the fact that Ty didn't apply for any position at BYU this past year would lead me to believe that he is getting paid pretty well by the school. The Detmer name is HUGE in Texas high school football, it's a private school, and as has been pointed out the coaches in Texas do pretty well in the public schools.



It's not just in Texas either. I looked up salaries from some of my high school coaches just a few years ago here in Utah. The basketball coach was making close to 80k at the time he retired.

My parents had a similar thing happen to them. Very not cool.

I imagine he gets a pretty healthy monthly check from his NFL retirement. Doesn't account for $2 million lost, but probably at least keeps his family fed. At least he didn't have to sit through an Amway presentation to be scammed by his ward members.

My dad had this happen to him, and what made it worse is that it was a good friend of his that took his money and ran. My dad never saw a dime back, and he never did quite fully recover from it.

I feel bad for Ty and I am sure it's not losing the money that is making him feel bad but it's now realizing he had a part in bringing other people into the SOB's scheme.



My Dad also had a good friend and busness partner embezzle a high 6 figure amount from his company and ran with my Dad never seeing a dime of it again. An even more incredible thing was this guy put my Dad down as a reference when he applied for a new job a couple of years later and the HR guy called my Dad to check the reference! How stupid is that!

Ditto w/ all the comments. Using trust, friendship & faith to steal is the lowest of lows! I feel Ty's pain - it makes you both sick & very angry.
