He's 6-7. Compare him to fellow TE Richard Wilson, our best endzone tight end last year, who is 6-2.

I wouldn't mind seeing Colby take over the position this fall camp, if he's good enough and ready enough...

In practice, yes. In games, no.

So then the answer is no.

Wilson is a non-factor. He's a tweener with no real position and so he's been bouncing between position for two, three years now. He'll be a non-contributor at BYU.

All of our TEs were tweeners and non-contributers last year.

Too bad Sampson left for a mission. He has potential.

They all have potential. Name the last great Freshman or RS freshman TE at BYU? Seriously, name one? Which leads me to--Jorgensen will RS this year. No reason to waste his year pre-mission when we still go 3-4 deep at the spot. That is, unless he is so superior to the others, which is unlikely. With another year in program, I expect Mahina, Holt and Wilson to be much improved this year. Much.

I still think the best two TEs on our depth chart are Wilson and Matthews. And yet the top two currently are Mahina and Holt. Plus there's still too much Edwards. So who knows.

And least Muehlmann is at DE now.

In the TE article by Franchuck, Reynolds specifically states that there is enough room for all three TEs to play given their skill set and what the situation is that plays to their strength. It is quite clear that Wilson has the speed and hands to get the ball and make something happen in the open field. I look for him to be used as an outlet with LB mismatches in pass coverage and quick slants to the middle among other things. Holt will definitely be used for blocking and helping seal off the inside on sweeps. Mahina most likely a pass option in the end zone with his height.

This is a bad idea. If the team does this, then it becomes an Anae-like offense where the personnel groups are tipping the defense off on the plays.

Oh look, here comes Holt, looks like a run play. Hey, here's Wilson, better make sure the LB knows to get in coverage on him.

I agree with Spiff. We need 1-2 TEs that can do everything and thus get the vast majority of the practice and game reps, not the mismatched mess that was last season.

We need to remember that in the past there have always been differences in TEs And they still saw playing time. Pitta was a better pass catcher and had more speed than George. George was a better blocker but could catch nonetheless. However, despite Pitta's outstanding pass catching ability, George still saw the field and did well when he played. Ditto for Mili and Lewis, etc. There will be a place for all three in whatever role or capacity Reynolds and Doman see fit.

I agree with Spiff. We need 1-2 TEs that can do everything and thus get the vast majority of the practice and game reps, not the mismatched mess that was last season.

I agree with everyone, so, in summary

A year of experience and hard work will improve all of them to some extent

Fall camp is not over - expect more improvement. Maybe someone jumps ahead - maybe not.

RB and WR and QB play will be much improved as will OL all of which will take some pressure off TE as they mature.

Finally

A rising tide lifts all boats. Heaps is bigger and stronger and is throwing with more consistency and precision even on Day 1 of camp. He will make TEs and everyone else look better in 2011. Call me a bandwaggoner if you will - but this self-proclaimed realist believes that Heaps has progresses even from how last season ended and that he will continue to progress.

I am not predicting perfection. The schedule strongly slants against a perfect season. I expect to see a much more competitive team than we saw in 2010.
