Putnam out. How much does BYU miss him?

DE Putnam has been ruled ineligible academically. I'm sure this is a blow to the DL, how much does it sting? Are we deep enough to absorb it without a major hiccup?

It hurts, we're deep, but it hurts. Putnam was a unique athlete who showed real potential and I was hoping we'd see a little more consistency and he'd really shine. Too bad.

My question is, How hard is it , really, to stay academically eligible over the summer? I know BYU is no cakewalk academically, but wouldn't the threat of being ineligible light a fire under your butt to make you get it done?

I also wonder why athletes are doing any work over the summer? to lighten the load for fall maybe? I wonder if this stems from winter 2011 semester issues that were never fully resolved.

Especially for a senior. You should know what courses to take in your major, what professors to avoid. Simply unacceptable for a senior to not make the grades.

Healthy, experienced, talented D-linemen on the roster in 2011:

1-Manumaleuna?

Fuga, Richardson... coming off of injuries, not fully recovered yet.

Dulan... just returned from a mission, Bronco wants to blue-shirt.

Bryson... suspended.

Putnum... academics, ineligible.

Fangupo... new to BYU schemes, rumored to be slightly overweight and lazy ("not an every-down player").

Muehlmann... was a TE last season.

Rowley, Tuiloma... young kids with no real starting experience.

Ansah... LB with no game knowledge.

Afo, Fabuluje... left BYU.

it hurst. If probably forces us to use dulan.

losing him and bryson stinks. good news is that bryson will be back even though he will miss fall camp. if that happens that is big news. he saw the field a lot last season. problem here is that we are thin and wobblign to start out. by the end of hte year things will be rolling but given that we play ole miss and texas the first two games we need some depth. ole miss especially given their style of play and the size of their offensive line.

Hopefully Bryson is ready to play once he returns for Fall Semester. He and Dulan will probably have to pick up the load. Any true freshman out there that you guys think can come in an contribute?? Wasn't that big of a fan of Putnam anyways. Too bad Fua isn't big enough yet to contribute at DE

The Desnews article stated,

The school announced Friday that defensive lineman Matt Putnam is academically ineligible. Putnam will not participate in fall camp while he works on academic qualifications, and if he remains academically ineligible, he would miss the 2011 campaign.

I read that he will not be eligible unless he gets his coursework in order prior to start of season. This means there is still hope for his return.

Jay says that the original news release (the one I read) stated he was out for the year, it was later announced that he would be held out while he worked on eligibility.

I thought it was academics before as well, but I could be wrong.

Putnam has had grades issues for a while. I know people that know him and he is similar to Zach Lindsay in that respect. Draw from that what you will. Another reason why Bronco asks more in the classroom. Hard enough with the HC, don't need academics casualties as well.

Also indicates that Rowley and Fangupo are penciled in as replacements and that Bronco feels there is sufficient depth. Ian Dulan is apparently looking good as well bit Bronco still would rather red-shirt him. Here's to Putnam getting a fire under his posterior and finishing his coursework so he can contribute to a great season.

Fangupo at DE is an interesting and very different philosophy, basically a 3-man DL with two and a half DTs (Tuiloma, Manumaleuna). Last year after the DT injuries we basically saw a 3-man DL with two and a half DEs (So'oto, Putnum, Manumaleuna)...

I like it in the sense that there is some serious strength combined with quickness which should create good pressure on the OL.

Great against the run (Miss, TCU), weak against the pass (Texas, Utah, Hawaii)?
