Chow Compares Wynn to Detmer

He claims Wynn has similar size, intellect, attitude, etc. However I believe he misses the point about leadership and results. To me, Chow is going to be stoking this rivalry fire to levels we haven't seen since the Urbane :-( Meyer days regarding that team to the north. Should be an interesting game in September.

He can compare him all he wants. He's still wrong. Chow is up in the night if he really thinks this. I bet he's just posturing for the media and trying to build up his QB. He also has no love lost for BYU, so I bet he'll do whatever he can to poke and prod BYU and its fans.

Is it? The job of an opposing coach is to rile opposing fan bases? I didn't realize that was in his job description. I thought he was hired to coach his team and players.



When Bronco riles Ute fans, it's not intentional and the purpose is not to rile them. He focuses on his team. Ute fans look to take offense at Bronco's words.



I think this is Chow speaking deliberately in a way he knows will rile BYU fans.

He is right in comparing them physically. Both were smaller QBs. Ty probably got up to 190, dripping wet. Wynn is really skinny and has not filled out at all since his freshman year. You'd think he'd have another 20-25 lbs on him by now. They high list him at 202, but I bet he goes at 190. Fragile is what comes to mind when I see photos of him, especially ones where he stands next to Brian Johnson, who is clearly more muscular and looks the part. If Wynn stays healthy all year, it will be a minor miracle.

I remember him in the weight room trying to do pull ups after hurting his shoulder, just testing it out. He was in pain. Plus, I can't believe he was more than 175. It still amazes me what he did with a relatively small football body.

...and I've compared Chow to a genius... both comparisons are about as accurate. ;)

Ty Detmer wouldn't survive a BYU schedule any more. College football is very different than it was 20 years ago. Gone are the days of 175-pound QB leading a team to a conference title.



I'm with you Law, I'll be very surprised if Wynn is healthy all year. Which is too bad for the Utes, because is their only QB with any level of competency ready for D1 football.

Norm Chow is a great football mind with the media savvy of a child. He has no filter, he says what comes in his mind. Just ignore him.

It would seem a bit ego-centric of byu fans to believe he said this to prod us. I think Lawboy is right--its about physical characteristics.

But I also think guys like Chow are happy to take the Lion's share of credit--along with the media who are happy to give it to him, that Chow is responsible for Detmer's Heisman, and all the USC qb's and so, in thinking he is the Heisman-Maker, he can take this scrawny dude and make him a winner. Besides (as his thinking would continue) how could a former WR OC in Roderick, possibly have the same influence that he, Chow, will in taking Wynn to the promised land.

I would be surprised if any of us would think that Wynn is a Detmer.

While many have held hard feelings for Chow for a long time, I never found much reason for that. Until now.



He keeps making these outlandish statements that Wynn is like Detmer, and he has clearly crossed the line.



Where were these comparisions when he was coaching at USC? Or the Titans: Steve Young vs. Vince Young?



He is doing this ONLY because he is at Utah, and I wonder how much of it is to consciously enrage the BYU base.

Winn is no Detmer and will never be close to it. Detmer didn't "happen" to throw for all that yardage and all those td's. He didn't just "happen" to beat #1 ranked Miami. He was supremely talented, with more football skills, sense, and knowledge in one finger of his throwing hand than winn will ever have. He didn't just "happen" to win a Heisman either. he won it from his outstanding play and proved he was one of the best ever QB's to play college ball.



As for him playing today, I would bet internal organs he would have the same type of career. To say otherwise goes against the facts. He played in the NFL for years and handled them just fine. If he could survive the years he did in the NFL then I am sure he could survive physically against today's college players. And I have yet to see a QB play who is as tough as him. He would hit his own players harder than the defense would after scores!

If Jordan Wynn wins the Heisman then I'll jump on board with this comparision.



Until then, this is just more red meat.

A Study in the Truth



Freshman seasons between the two can probably be made, it's a fairly even comparison.

Ty Detmer completed 94 of 170 (55.3%) for 1381 yards. With 14 TDs and 10 picks.

Jordan Wynn completed 104 of 179 (58.1%) for 1329 yards. With 8 TDs and 4 picks.



Sophmore year, well I wont name the player just guess which one is which.

Player X completed 186 of 229 passes (62.2%) for 2334 yards. With 17 TDs and 10 picks.

Player Y completed 307 of 471 passes (65.2%) for 5136 yards. With 34 TDs and 17 picks.



Also, just for fun, here are Jake Heaps stats as BYU Freshman QB last year.

Jake Heaps completed 219 of 383 passes (57.2%) for 2316 yards. With 15 TDs and 9 picks.

Of the three guys listed, it looks like two of them knew how to throw TD passes and one doesn't.
