The best starting 4 in secondary

After reading the article and looking at the personnel at FC, BC, FS and SS - it appears that Sorenson and Uale are set at the safety positions. However, Hadley and Sampson appear to be the most athletically gifted physical specimens with JC experience, lock down capability that can also bring lumber. What do you think their chances of starting are compared to the players that have been in the system (i.e. Where does that leave Eason, Buckner, Johnson, Everett, et. al.)?

I can almost guarantee you that Eason will start... somewhere. He'll play where ever it allows Bronco and Coach Howell to get the best four on the field. My guess is that will still be at boundary corner. We have some very intriguing options at field corner with Buckner and Johnson and solid depth across the board. Due to inexperience alone, the secondary must be considered the 'weakest link' of the defense but I feel very confident in their abilities to make this a top statistical year in BYU history.

Isn't Eason the one that is over 6' and 200 lbs. and runs something like a 4.4? I'd think they could use him somewhere.

Eason is 5'7". Stood next to him before, and he is that height. He runs a 4.4 though. And his cover skills have gotten may better the last 2 years. IF he is healthy, he will play a lot.



I like our depth because it means true competition for jobs, and j=not just guys going through the motions. This is hte fastest, most athletic secondary BYU has had--pre Bryan Kehl--so if they play well as a unit, they could be really solid.

I think the guy I was thinking of was Daquan Everett who's 6'3" and 210. He's being looked at as a boundry corner.

Eason will start, as long as his recovery from surgery goes as planned. He is a bonafide stud, and should have started over Bradley halfway through last year.

I think Eason will be an upgrade from Bradley.



Our safeties are gifted athletically, more so than usual, it is the experience part that is an issue.

All seriousness - experience will be the key early and hopefully the rest of the team will provide a buffer while the new guys learn. Hopefully Uale's experience willcserve him well as he had a slow start in 2010 when he was inexperienced.

:skeptic: Eason played a bunch. Pretty close to every other down by the end of the season. He should have played more. Bradley was a big part of the reason teams ran so well to the outside on us. Do you want to know how you knew when Eason was in, and not Bradley? Well, one was tackling guys, and one was in the backfield with a WR sitting on him.



And I know you are tight with Uale's dad and everything, but getting burned by a 60 yard play for a TD every single game isn't a "slow start." That is just terrible defense.

Anybody else concerned that Uale is supposed to be the "captain" of the DB's??

I am not concerned about Uale. If he starts, it means he earned it. I love his speed, just want to see his instincts improve. The positions in the secondary are pretty much up for grabs, and they are really looking at all combinations of guys right now.

Coaches have a lot of turst in Uale in terms of understanding schemes and putting guys in the right spot. while he takes bad angles and is usually slow to get where he needs to be he seems to have the mental party down.



hopefully he can end up like scotty johnson who wasn't the most amazing athlete in the world but he was a huge asset to the defense as the 'quarterback' of the d. also had heart and was not afraid to sacrifice his body.

Looks like Hague is pushing Uale for the starting FS spot. It'd be cool to see Hague run with it



per Jay Drew: * Mendenhall said the battle between Mike Hague and Travis Uale to be the starting free safety "is neck and neck right now." Hague has made great strides, considering Uale was the starter there last year.
