Thoughts about TX Game

Local TX sports blogger worried about youth of TX secondary (translate inexperience) and lack of talent at QB. Sees Heaps picking apart DBs and our defense really putting outside pressure on QB which could lead to poor decisions. Heaps and company could be primed for an outstanding season and gain valuable confidence for rest of season if we take two on the road in hostile environments.

....AND then expectorate the spUties back to the Pac-nothing--yep, it could shape up to a great season.

Don't forget this. Historically speaking, BYU is 2-0 against Texas all time in college football. BYU will have two good backs and 3 to 4 good receivers ready to roll in the Texas game. The only thing that could hurt BYU's offense is the TE position.



As much as Texas's DB's will struggle against BYU, keep in mind BYU's secondary will have to prove themselves as well since only 1 player from last years secondary is returning. Texas also has a little wildcard in that they could end up playing a little guy by the name of Case McCoy over Garrett Gilbert, and we all know what problems guys by the name of McCoy have given good teams in the past. The uncertainty at QB for Texas could result in BYU's defense having to plan for multiple attacks, and they have excelled more often when they only have to plan for one type of QB instead of two.

I think if Heaps starts out with a good game against Ole Miss than Texas should be worried. I think the offense will have a lot of confidence and would be a virtual wrecking ball at that time.

If qb is unsettled I expect bronco to devise an agressive attack strategy so regardless of the qb stlye it will be hard

My thoughts on the game:

1. It can't come soon enough, I am ready for BYU football.

Officially the team is Garrett Gilbert's. However there are a lot of fans calling for Case to be the starting QB, and Case was the best of the 4 QB's during spring football. If Gilbert struggles early on, then don't be surprised if UT ends up switching QB's. Personally I think the QB battle will be decided before conference play begins on October 1 for UT, but with the games before then being Rice, BYU, and at UCLA, UT won't be having any favors for light offenses facing them to start the year.

7 out of 10 years huh. Well, lets see, Texas is 0-2 against BYU lifetime in college football. I guess that means UT needs to win two or all three of these series games to make your statement reality. Don't get me wrong, Texas usually has good teams, but that doesn't mean they would beat BYu as often as you think they would. There's a reason Texas usually struggles against teams they have no reason to struggle against and have a hard time beating the more successful programs in the nation.

Texas gets talent, but they still lose some games. 1 NC in the last decade, but close other times beats our history of late. They are dependent on a QB though, because they have nt ben a great running team for a while. Similar to OU, when they get good QB play, they are tough to beat and have elite talent all over the field. However, they also have weaknesses, and this year, BYU should be able to exploit them.

Agreed. And I don't believe they have their QB situation anywhere near worked out yet. By the 2nd game of the season they will still have a controversy on their hands. I've got my tickets ordered, my hotel booked, and I'm expecting to have a GREAT time September 10th!

Sure. And BYU only beats Utah State about 50% of the time too. History can be accurately applied to every season.

UT is going down. Big 12 schools don't worry me very much in football because they play a similar style to ours. We all know that UT has talent, but they don't have a Q right now and if they have to rely on running (a freshman is their guy I believe) then it should not be too tough a game.

Gilbert will start for Texas, and he is a Junior this year. He has struggled to live up to his Elite 11 rep, however. Yes--he was an Elite 11 QB, so it is no guarantee of success. If you have seen him play, you know he is streaky good. If he takes the next step, he will be legit, but he seems to have not been able to. I suspect BYU will put 8 in the box and dare the Texas staff to beat us with the pass, and since their new OC is from Boise State, he will be inclined to try to. Our secondary play will be the factor in this game. We need our secondary to be really solid this year. Especially the first 3 weeks.

Well if that is true, there is reason to worry because that is really the only area of concern in my mind, that and receivers (hopefully this problem has been solved but i am waiting to see results on the field before I declare that area a strength)

I think the secondary will be the key to this defense. IF they are solid, our D will be outstanding. Remember how good the 2006 D was, and we had average secondary play that year, but the LB play was so outstanding. Our LB group is even more talented this year. which is saying something, and we also have solid defensive line with depth. If the safety play is good, we will be awesome. I think the corners will be just fine because we have depth and experience returning. Safety concerns me the most. Kehl has practiced with the team this year and commented that this BYU secondary will be the fastest BYU has ever had. If that translates to position mastery and playmaking, should be great.
