Tired of all the false rumors.

I just want to know who we feasibly could play in 2012. Based on what I see, we have 10 games confirmed for 2012, six away and four home. That means we need just two more home games. I expect one of them to be against a FCS team and have heard Southern Utah rumored as a possibility for that game. What about the 12th game? I looked at some teams 2012 schedules on fbschedules.com and there seem to be a lot of teams, even BCS teams, who still have some games left to schedule for that year and on. What is feasible to expect for those last couple of games? Could one of them be a BCS team? Could both of them be FCS teams? Is it more likely to be a C-USA, MAC, or Sun Belt team? Is it anyone's wildest guess at this point? Does TH even know?

Come on, really? You think TH has no clue? That he's just throwing darts a map and then calling the AD of the closest school. I didn't realize the 2012 schedule had to be completed before the 2011 season started.

Had you heard of Southern Miss even being a rumored opponent before it was announced? I hadn't. BYU has become pretty good about keeping future opponents quiet until announced.



I'm guessing that if you're seeing openings on fbsschedules.com that TH probably knows who has openings as well. And he's in a slightly better position to actually do that.



Scheduling is tough. You just don't call up and AD and say, "Hey, I saw on the Internet, that you're team isn't playing anyone? You guys want to come to Provo?"

For 2012 Holmoe said the teams and dates are decided, but we are working on TV rights for both of them, so nothing is official yet. He is making sure we have the rebroadcasting rights on BYUtv. I recall TH saying that they would not do 13 games in 2012 even thought we could. I would imagine that if a deal is getting hung up on the tv rights or other complications, then it would be with teams a bit out of the ordinary. I cannot imagine a tv rights issue with a FCS team or even a C-USA, MAC, MWC, or Sun Belt Team. I am hopeful they are two solid BCS teams, but expecting the worst - two FCS teams.

Good point. Also don't forget what Bronco said about teams changing their schedule to play us on ESPN. Remember, he was surprised by how willing some teams where to do it. If that were the case for a 2012 game, it could be why things are complicated, especially if more than one school was involved do to voiding previously signed contracts.

What happened to what Jan Jorgenson was talking about on the radio a few days ago? Was anybody here listening, when he was talking about somebody pointed out to him that there's this site, that is somehow with ARMY, but released some of their 2012 schedule and we happened to be on it. He was talking like it was breaking news, and even talked about the match up a little more, and said that he'd much rather play NAVY. Was I like the only one listening to that station that day? Haha, I haven't heard or seen anybody say anything about this. I kept checking back and thinking that somebody would post something talking about it, but no one ever did....

Didn't we have a few games scheduled with Army that got cancelled? Seems like someone was looking at a website that wasn't current.

I hope this isn't the case, as a season ticket holder I would be ticked if BYU, especially as an Independent, had to play more road games than home games. I think with BYU holding all the cards in relation to scheduling should have more home games than road games.

No. He didn't say that. This is a good example of false rumors that people are getting tired of.



In discussing what the schedule for 2012 looks like beyond the 9 games we know of: "We have two that the irons are in the fire, but it is complicated. One of them [the 10th] is going to happen. The other two are complicated."

Given that he classifies one as "going to happen," but that the other two are merely "irons in the fire" and "complicated," I think you are really stretching his words to get to "teams and dates are decided, but we are working for TV rights for both of them."

Yeah we did and if my memory serves me right I thought the first was supposed to be played in 2012. So you may be right with that but maybe not also. Who really knows with all the rumors flying around. I know bronco has mentioned trying to get the service academies on our future schedule and with the espn deal, that could potentially mean more money for a team. Then who's to say that because of the circumstances they may have reconsidered.

BYU and TH made it VERY clear that the first 2 years of Indy schedules would be tougher. 2011 has turned out solid, but most are roadies and 2012 will be similar. It is 2013 and beyond where I am hopeful of seeing some of the rumored teams showing up (Penn State, Wisconsin or NW, ACC schools, BE school, etc).



Anyone expecting a BCS game every week has expectation issues. Not even BCS teams have BCS games each week, and some BCS games they play are dogs too. BYU will take a similar approach in scheduling. Probably go after 3 tiers of schools. 1. Certain wins 2. Probable wins 3. Tougher games.



USM fit into #2.

We're not playing Hawaii @ Hawaii in 2012, only in 2011. I believe the 13th game stipulation only happens to teams that schedule a game in Hawaii. I could be wrong, but that is how I've had it understood for some time.

I think what TH was saying was that in 2012 we probably wont have 7 home games, even though that is how they want to setup our schedule in the future with 7 home games and 5 away games.

That is correct. Only Hawaii and teams that play at Hawaii are allowed to have 13 games in the regular season, unless a team should play in a conference championship game.



For those fearing two FCS schools, it should be noted that only 1 win against an FCS team can go toward the 6 game win rule for bowl games, which is why I don't expect BYU to schedule more than 1 FCS school a season. It should also be noted that Bronco Mendenhall said they would be looking toward regional rivals for the FCS games first, meaning Southern Utah, Weber State, Idaho State, and basically any of the schools in the Big Sky Conference would probably be their first contacts.



As for what's confirmed in 2012:

Oregon State (Sept 01), Hawaii (Sept 08), at Utah (Sept 15), at Boise State (Sept 22), Utah State (Oct 05), at Georgia Tech (Oct 13), at Notre Dame (Oct 20), Idaho (according to BYU Football Media Day), at New Mexico State, and at San Jose State. Additionally Louisiana Tech is an option since the contract with La Tech was originally for 2011-2012, though they said it would be rescheduled. It could still have 1 game fall in 2012 (probably in Provo), and probably 1 FCS team in Provo. That would be the 12 games. Basically 9 are confirmed, a tenth is strongly hinted at from BYU Football Media Day, and 2 remain to be scheduled or finalized.
