Looking at our 2014 schedule, this is a great add. Really great. Our road schedule is brutal, and we need some solid home games that are not killers. This fits perfectly, especially since this is rumored to be an October/November game for us.

Always excited to play those C-USA teams. Okay, I lied, but I'm trying to be positive.



I just don't see it as progress to give home and aways to teams that only average 29K attendance per game. Granted USU only avereaged about 18K/game in 2010, but for the extra 11K we'll consider you an equal and not expect you to do 2fers.



I don't know what I want, but it seems like the 16 year old boy that looks only like he's 12 and he's sitting on some phone books so he looks taller and so he can actually see out the window of the car to drive. I guess I have to look at the positive and note that at least they got them to come to our place first.

The press release from USM didn't mention anything about the month. Who is rumoring that it is an October/November game? Now that would be a benefit if it was a late October or November game.

It is based upon comments made by BM and Dave Brown at Media Day. They referrred to C-USA teams willing to do late season.

Two things that should be clear - we are following the pattern that Holmoe and Mendenhall requested - good programs with rich history that we will play anywhere and anytime and ability to reach fan base spread across the country. The away games will be very entertaining, in storied locations and best of all - able to be seen on ESPN or BYUtv by fans and potential recruits. They certainly will help in recruiting because they will demonstrate where we are talent wise and how we stack up against the big boys.



This being said, we need some hopefully gimme games like USM because the away games are difficult. They have some speed, they have some talent, and hopefully we will put up numbers to keep us entertained and get valuable playing time to develop depth. Think about OK and TX when they would play the WY, AF and USU. Those teams all game them some challenges because it was David vs Goliath. Attendance was still great and ours hopefully will be the same.

Don't forget that away games will not necessarily be shown on ESPN or BYUtv. Home games will fall under the contract that the home school has in place.

Does anyone have any idea when the complete '12 schedule will be announced? Bronco pretty much said that all the games are set. What are they waiting on?

Holmoe said we have the games locked up, but we are working on TV rights, so things haven't been officially signed yet. We want to be able to rebroadcast games on BYUtv.

No, he didn't. Bronco made comments that could be interpreted that way in the media day "state of the program" interview, but Holmoe provided more details later in the media interviews that made clear that is not the case.



9 are done deals, the tenth has been agreed to in principle and just needs to be put in writing, but the last two are "complicated."

Maybe they plan to announce one game a week to ge us through the rest of summer and keep our attention.

They were 8-5 last year and rival has them ranked this year at 53 between Oregon St, Ole Miss and Hawaii.

We don't know when the first of the 2 home ND games will be. My guess is we play the first 2 in 2012 and then 2013, then take a year or 2 off, go back to ND for the 3rd, then go every other year. I'm pretty certain we will play them 3 times at South Bend before we get our first one at home.



With the way we have been doing schedules, I'm surprised with didn't give USM a two for 1 for them.



If scheduling does not improve soon we can continue to look forward to years like this, where most, if not all, the good games are on the road.

I would be totally okay with this...It was a relief to have some real news today. At least we know now that announcements could come anytime and TH and ESPN are not waiting for some big event to make announcements.

How has anything changed? This is the same as it's been the last year. Big announcements and new opponents scheduled could come at any time. Very few of the schedule announcements came several days after it was common knowledge. Most of them have come as surprises.

From recent article in Deep Shades of Blue, there are two very good reasons for signing agreement with USM:



1. "Those ventures into the deep south gives BYU’s independent schedule a bit of a southern fried flavor. Athletic Director Tom Holmoe is quoted in the school’s press release as saying that the series gives BYU fans in the south another opportunity to see the Cougars play in person. Playing games in SEC and ACC country certainly won’t hurt BYU’s recruiting efforts in that talent-rich region either."



2. "Southern Miss is the type of program that Cougar fans can expect to begin to see replace teams like San Jose State, New Mexico State and Idaho on future schedules. The Golden Eagles are a definite upper-echelon program in C-USA, having won four conference titles and finishing as the runner-up twice since the league was formed in 1996."



Again the decision boils down to exposure (for fans and potential recruits) as well as strength of schedule.

Even though this is SEC country. One thing I know about the South. When a unique program like BYU comes into a region like this to play a "lesser" school like USM. Millions of people will definitely take notice ESPECIALLY residents of Mississippi.



We're getting attention in the South! Just played in the state of Florida. About to play in Mississippi with Georgia in the future. I wouldn't be surprised if we sign with schools in Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina, etc...



We WILL earn the respect of the South, just like how we earned the respect of the Nation when we beat Oklahoma EXCEPT we get to do this almost yearly. When we earn the respect of the South THEN we will be the Notre Dame of the West EXCEPT we will be BYU!

And most come only after the team that we scheduled the game with breaks the news first.
