BYU Sophomore QBs

So he's on the watch list for the O'Brien award. Who's willing to predict that he will be a finalist for the Heisman by the time he is a junior?

I'm guessing the sophomore records are Detmer's sophomore season:

13 Starts

10 Wins

4,560 Yards passing

265 Competions

32 TDs



Heaps should approach starts, possibly wins. He'll likely get there in completions, but I'm not sure about yards or TDs.

I watched the '89 Utah game yesterday, probably his best game that year. They stretched the defense WAY more vertically than the Anae offense did, and it worked because the line gave Detmer all day to throw. The holes in the zone were so big that even a 10-yard dump off could turn into 20-30 (or more) with YAC.



If the rumors about the strength of our line and the vertical nature of the Doman offense are true, we may see something similar this year. Probably not 4500 yards passing, but a similar yards per pass.

With the speed of our receivers, and with Doman's stretch the vertical field approach, and with our O line being strong; I think yards per pass could be Heaps record this year.



He should put up some big numbers in our home games.

BYU has 7 home games. I wouldn't be surprised to see us score more than 300 points in our home games.

1989 was Detmer's most efficient year according to the statistic. If you include the Holiday Bowl game, Detmer's line is like this:



307 completions

471 attempts

5,136 yards (16.7 yd/comp, 10.9 yd/att)

34 TD

17 INT

173.4 NCAA Passer Efficiency Rating (175.6 pre-bowl)

110.9 NFL Passer Rating (112.5 pre-bowl)



The amazing stats are yards per completion and attempt. To put these into perspective, in Max Hall's best season, he averaged 13.1 yd/comp and 8.9 yd/att. In John Beck's best season, he averaged 13.4 yd/comp and 9.3 yd/att. In Steve Sarkisian's best season (including the Cotton Bowl), he averaged 14.1 yd/comp and 9.8 yd/att. McMahon's junior year (including the Holiday Bowl) was close, 15.9 yd/comp and 10.2 yd/att.

Wow. Stiff competition. I think Heaps will get close but not break these.



I'm guessing that Heaps can take all of the BYU records (if there are any) for "total stats after the QB's sophomore season." So two years of stats, at a point in his career where most BYU QBs have one or none.

Unless you want to count Kevin Feterik (1997) he only had 5 interceptions, but he missed 3 games in the middle of the year and didn't play the first half of the first game.
