So How Much $$ with 10 games on ESPN?

Are there any hard numbers that have been reported? I know ballpark numbers between $1-2 million per game, that should be a minimum of $15 mil in TV revenue this year, and if they can make it to a BCS game that would be an additional $15-17 mil so money coming into the program this year could be over $30 million. Even if they don't go BCS they are looking at min $15 million.

Has anyone heard official numbers?

BYU does not get any ESPN $$$ for road games, just home and neutral field games. BYU does get paid by the visiting team for road games, however. I suspect the money will be great for ESPN games, good for ESPN2 games, and so-so for ESPNU games, based upon viewership numbers. If I had to guess, I would assume BYU will make $10M on all TV games this year, combined, but no official numbers have been released. Added money for road games.

I do not think the $$$ will be as great as some hope. But it will still be way better than the MWC in terms of $$ and exposure. But BYU has never needed the top $$$ and will never chase it.

All I know is that it's a lot, and infinitely more than Utah is getting from the PAC-12 this year.

Aren't you making as much money on the Pac-12 deal as Utah this year? :utard:

Actually, Utah will make more $$ this year in the PAC-12 than they would have in the MWC. While they get no Football or hoops regular season TV money, they still get a share of post season money. So they get a cut on all bowl funds, on all NCAA tourney $$$ the league makes, and any other post-season $$$ that rolls in, for sports like women's softball, gymnastics or whatever. As bad as that sounds, it will still be more than the $4M or so the MWC doles out. So they are not getting $0 entirely. And if you make $4M per year, I want a job...

If BYU goes BCS, they are not going to be taking home all $15-17 million. I would be surprised if their payout is more than $5 million.

They are not part of the BCS, and as such they are not entitled to any fixed sum like every other FBS school except Navy and Army. Whichever BCS bowl extended them an invite would just make an offer that BYU could refuse or accept.

Well I hope the pac can get some bowl eligible teams then.

Yeah, it seemed like when ND made its last BCS bowl they only got like $9 mill even though the payout was much greater.

Yeah, but that is also part of their deal with the BCS. They get something like 4.5 million every year from the BCS regardless of whether they go to a BCS bowl game or not. I don't know for sure if that is on top of whatever bowl money they may take too or not. So the years they do go to a BCS bowl they get essentially double the payout, but not as much as a team from a BCS conference would. But it makes sense. A BCS conference team gets twice as much because 50% of their cut goes to the conference "pot" to be divided equally among the membership. So a team like Texas or OU only gets to keep around 9 million of the $17 BCS bowl payout from their bowl win. Then they get an equal share of the postseason payouts from all the conference's bowl and ncaa tourney games.

It cuts both ways for Notre Dame. I would hope though that since BYU doesn't get an annual payout from the BCS they could take the whole pot but it wouldn't surprise me to find out that it wouldn't happen.

You are giving Notre Dame too much credit (although given their recent run of mediocrity the deal they made is making them more money than their original deal). Notre Dame only gets $1 million each year from the BCS no matter what. If they play in a BCS game, that amount gets bumped up to $4.5 million--$4.5 million is their ceiling, not their annual stipend.

Again--that is their contract with the BCS, and the payouts to all of the conference affiliated schools are also controlled by a contract. BYU does not have a contract with the BCS. They are simply an "at-large" team and would have to negotiate their BCS payout either at the time of the invite to play in the game or by signing their own contract with the BCS.

There is no way a BCS game is going to offer an at-large team that is not under contract the full share that a BCS conference gets for it's first invite. I would be surprised if they even offer a full $4.5 million--the amount Notre Dame gets for a berth and what a BCS conference gets (or the non-autobid conferences collectively split) for their second team in the BCS in a given year. I would think BYU, as a non-BCS affiliated school would at most get $4 million as a payout, and probably less than that, simply because they have almost no leverage at that point--either take what we offer and play on the big stage, or take your ball and go play in the Holiday or Armed Forces Bowl.

The BCS is not the financial windfall many think it is. Even with the huge payout, some teams have lost $$ on BCS games because they did not sell enough tickets, so their share got reduced accordingly. Also, even though the big conference teams get a huge payout, the league gets the majority of it to parse out to other league members. In some cases, teams from BCS leagues that did not go to the bowl actually profited more than teams that went because it is expensive to go to one of those games.

I've too read about many teams that lose money in the big games but can't imagine that ever happening to BYU. I imagine (and hope) that when that day comes our tickets sell out fast and we end up gobbling up the opponents' as well. Blue out. I'll be there.

Last year's BCS payouts:

AQ Conferences (Total = $145.2 million)

-- Big Ten, Pac-10, SEC $27.2 million

-- ACC, Big 12, Big East $21.2 million

-- Total: $145.2 million

Non-AQ Conferences (total = $24.72 million)

-- Mountain West $12.75 million (or ~$1.1 million to each school after bowl expenses)

-- WAC $4.05 million

-- CUSA $3.34 million

-- Mid-American $2.64 million

-- Sun Belt $1.94 million

Others (total = $4.15 million)

-- FCS conferences $2.25 million

-- Notre Dame $1.7 million

-- Army $100,000

-- Navy $100,000

Should be noted that the SEC, PAC10 and Big Ten got more because they placed 2 teams in the BCS last year. The 2nd team only added $6M per conference, not a double payout.

You are probably correct here and I didn't realize BYU wouldn't receive a full payout, but they are not completely without leverage. BYU's card in the whole is ESPN. Considering ESPN now controls all but two bowl games I would expect BYU's take to be north of the $4 million payout. I am probably wrong here, but ESPN really has a vested interest in making sure BYU got the best deal possible.

Perhaps new football slogans for the future:

Band of TV Brothers

Fully Invested by a real network

Quest for HDTV perfection

Family of ESPN Stations are Forever

Popcorn popping while watching ESPN TV.
