Interesting article by Ivan Maisel on pay-for-play. Think he summed it up really well. Pay for play would be dumb. And tax laws would kill this arrangement.



However, paying students for an endorsement deal not addressed, and could work. Of course, it is income to them, but do not hing they would mind.

I'm completely against schools paying athletes above and beyond tuition, books, room, and board. However, Jackson Emery wants to use his local celebrity to do commercials to sell Toyotas then he should be able to. If a player wants to trade a sweatshirt he signed for a tattoo so be it. The NCAA should be far more concerned with class attendance than tattoos.

Players all over get paid to do play anyways...the only way they wont be is if schools are forced to hire NCAA agents. Or the NCAA puts offices in 120 schools.

So let me get this straight: Maisel says people don't buy the amateur BS anymore. Then he says if Universities pay athletes they won't make as much money (so what?) and the school will be on the hook financially if their players punch someone. I'd say those are all good things. People will be paid what they are worth and schools will be less likely to hire violent people. Maisel sounds like he is coming around to freedom for college athletics just like people are in general.



Oh and ESPN has several articles on the subject today. Check out Mike Wilbon's. He actually uses the word capitalism without flinching.

What really needs to happen is for the NFL to step in. How about the Dallas Cowboys sponsor the Texas Longhorns. UT becomes the de facto farm team for the Cowboys. If you sign with UT, the Cowboys have the right of first refusal for your professional rights. You receive a stipend in addition to your scholarship - which paid not by UT but by the Cowboys.

Why buy the cow when you get the milk for free?

Because you wouldn't have to compete with other teams for those players rights. Think about a team being able to sign any player coming through Florida before any other team. Any player you don't pick up would go in the draft.
