How I love the 2 for 1

Wickchad84087 had a great point that we should leverage football and basketball together.



There are some huge programs that we would like to play that would only play us on a 2 for 1 status or a H-H-NSN (not-so-neutral) status. These are programs like Texas, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, etc. There are some programs that BYU would rather play a 2 for 1 in BYU's favor. Utah State comes to mind.In basketball, it seems nobody wants to play in the Marriott Center. Especially if you have a decent to very good major conference program. Michigan St., Oklahoma St. and Arizona come to mind here.



So how does BYU get major programs to play at LES and the MC? The answer is leveraging the 2 for 1 in football to help basketball.



What if BYU scheduled H-H-NSN for football in return for H-H-games at the ESA in basketball. What if they did the reverse for schools like Utah State. 2 for 1 in favor of BYU in football for 2 for 1 in favor of "smaller school" for basketball. This way the schedule can remain balanced for football while having major teams play at both LES and the MC.



The football schedule could look something like this:



2 football power 2 for 1s per year- Texas, Notre Dame, Alabama, etc.



3 mid tier football programs with great hoops teams in a H-H-NSN arrangement (neutral site possibility in parantheses)- Arizona (UOP Stadium in Glendale), Syracuse (the Meadowlands), UConn (Gilette Field in Foxboro Mass), North Carolina (Charlotte), and Kentucky (Cincinnati)



3 "smaller school" 2 for 1s in BYU's favor- Utah St., NMSU, Idaho, any MAC or Sun Belt school.



1 FCS Team



Utah and Hawaii



A home and home with a MWC team, CUSA team, or another BCS conference team.



So in 2021:

football home games Utah, North Carolina, Utah St., FCS team, Idaho, SDSU

football road games @Hawaii, @Alabama, @Arizona, @NMSU, @Michigan

football NSN game Kentucky @ Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati



Basketball home games Arizona, NMSU, a bunch of other scrub games

Basketball road games @Utah, @Utah St., @North Carolina, @Idaho

ESA game Kentucky



2022:

football home games Hawaii, Utah St., FCS team, Michigan, Kentucky, NMSU

This way BYU can still put up big win totals in both football and basketball. They can play elite teams in both sports at home. Football would get to play in exciting venues. Exposure would be through the roof.

You've put some good thought to possibilities.



I just don't like the idea of this 2fer mainly from the standpoint that it makes your program look like second class. The BCS school that doesn't therefore receive a 2fer then takes a hit to their prestige as not being one of those power schools. I'm sure that USU is spinning to think that we would expect a 2fer from us after they beat us in FB last season pretty convincingly. But the truth is all I can do is whine about the state of what it is and just be glad I don't have to be responsible for making it happen. Even though it bugs me to no end to know what's happening behind closed doors, at least TH does keep all of this type of information very close to his vest for the most part so he never burns any bridges. I think I would have more inclined to have told a few schools where to go and had no one left to play except FCS schools.

BYU should consider 3 for 1s with teams from the Sun Belt or WAC. There is no need to go to Moscow, Idaho or Las Cruses, New Mexico. Those teams would make more coming to Provo than hosting BYU.

I don't believe we will be playing at Idaho any time soon. Rumors are that BYU has told them that their stadium (basketball arena) is too small and they are actually in negotiation to have Idaho come back to Provo again in 2012.



My point about using 2 for 1's with high profile teams is to do the contact as a home-away-neutral with the neutral site being closer to their school. In exchange their basketball team agrees to a home and away deal with us where they have to play at the Marriott Center. That would help get some big name schools in Provo for basketball instead of only getting a game at ESA from these teams.



The big name basketball teams seem to not play anyone tough on the road in non-conference play. Last season Duke didn't schedule a road game out of North Carolina before the conference schedule started (their one road game was at UNC Greensboro). They played in a neutral site tournament and also played Butler on a neutral court otherwise they didn't go on the road.



In most cases the football program carries more clout than the basketball program. So if the football team wants a huge ESPN payday playing in an NFL stadium their AD needs to tell the basketball coach that they are going to be playing in Provo.



Also the games could be paired up so the basketball teams could play on Thursday or Friday and then the football teams could play on Saturday. The traveling team's fans could stay to see both games. Could be a great way to get teams to come to Provo in late November. Their fans could see a basketball game, football game, and go ski on the greatest snow on earth all on the same weekend.

I'd rather do 2 for 1s in basketball to get 1 for 1s in football.

So the question may be asked, which sport offers the greatest advantage to the home team football or basketball? Another way of asking would be does home field/court advantage play a bigger role in football or basketball?
