Jake Heaps will not break Ty Detmer's records

"The two biggest and most important Brigham Young Cougars passing records are owned by Ty Detmer. Most career passing yards: 15,031; and most career touchdown passes: 121. Current BYU quarterback Jake Heaps has gotten off to a better start than Detmer did. As freshmen, Heaps out gained Detmer by 1,064 passing yards (2,316 to 1,252). Heaps also threw two more touchdown passes than Detmer did (15 to 13). Although Heaps is ahead after year one, he will not break Detmer’s career records, even if he plays all four years."

With Bronco as DC we won't have to score as much to win. With Juice and Diluigi we will have a better running game than we did when Ty was here.



I think we win more games, but Jake has fewer yards passing and few TD's

Heaps does have one advantage over Detmer--he gets to count bowl statistics in his totals. While statistically Detmer's final two bowls were poor (A&M) and average (Iowa), he did have a ripper of a game against Penn State.

Detmer had Kalin Hall and Jamal Lewis. They were not terrible. Having said that, BYU will at worst be a 60/40 pass/run ratio most games. Detmer put it up a lot more than that.

Not only was he not terrible, he was the school's leading rusher until Curtis Brown. It goes to show you just how much offense we needed to win games with a bad defense going up against offenses like SDSU had, with Marshall Faulk in the backfield and multiple deep threats (including Faulk) in the passing game.



Also, Ty only had '91 with Willis, and never played with Hall, who played '92-'93. He did play with Mike Salido, Peter Tuipulotu, Hema Heimuli, Matt Bellini - like you said, not terrible backs. I think a leaky defense explains the extra passing more than an anemic running game.

In 1989, BYU ran the ball 419 times and threw the ball 434 times.

In 1990, BYU ran the ball 388 times and threw the ball 580 times.

In 1991, BYU ran the ball 416 times and threw the ball 419 times.



Aside from 1990 when BYU was trying to get Detmer gaudy numbers to keep pace with David Klingler and the Heisman, BYU was remarkably balanced in pass/run.



Their last three seasons Max Hall threw it 496, 477 and 409 times; and Beck threw 343, 514 and 417 times. Those numbers are relatively close to Detmer's. What remains to be seen is if BYU will throw the ball down field more like Detmer did.

Didn't realize how balanced Detmer's career was. Feels like it was so much more pass oriented!

The last Detmer game I watched had a TON of draw plays. A lot of them went nowhere, but every once in a while we caught them off guard and gained like 20. So, by play count, it was balanced, but by yardage, we got it done through the air.



Also, don't sacks count as rushes in college?
