Future Expansion of Big-12 with BYU et al

Anyone heard anything recently about the Big 12 (currently at 10 teams) expanding to 4 more teams to create two 7 team conferences and keep the title game? With the addition, it would be the largest conference presently formed. Suggested additions have included BYU because of widespread and dedicated fan base, BSU because of their recent success against top teams and their BCS wins. TCU as a perennial powerhouse, and Houston as a top Conference USA team in the fourth largest city and top TV market. What do you think about this scenario?

I love the scenario, but i'm not so sure it will happen.

TCU just left to join the Big East. Why would leave to join the Big 12? Why would the Big 12 expand in Texas. They already own all of Texas with Texas and Texas A&M. Adding TCU and/or Houston does not any market share.

I think the Big 12 has no choice but to expand to 12 teams, but they are on the same TV deal for one more year, so if anything is going to happen, it will be soon. Fox just signed a huge deal with the Big 12 for secondary rights, and primary rights are still up for grabs. It is does not happen for 2012, it will not happen for YEARS. Rumors being that BYU being on the short list, with Arkansas being at the top, along with Louisville, and outsiders being Boise State, AFA or even CSU.



Not holding my breath, though. But based upon recent events, it is clear that BYU would add value to the Big XII, even if football only, which is an option.

I'd bet BSU has a dickens of a time getting out of the MWC. Didn't the MWC just instigate some new leaving policies.

Wasn't it like $5M or so to leave now.

I would think the likely senario will be Arkansas and BYU to the B12 North. BSU has virtually no chance of a BCS invite since they offer almost nothing but a small fan base, a small blue football field, and the ultimate Cinderella reputation. Education wise they would brind down the conference as well. Not good. As for TCU they will never get the invite for some of the same reasons but mostly because they offer no TV leverage. Louisville has a pretty good chance but I think they really enjoy the bball conf they are in and already enjoy the BCS money. AFA and CSU I would call darkhorses and would get the invite only if BYU or Ark declined and the conference was set on expanding. But I definitly see Ark and BYU being the huge favorites. Both offer great academics, great athletic programs, great history, and each deliver a state.

The next season will be pretty interesting and I expect a lot of pundits to be talking about the B12 and expansion all year long.

IF BYU starts out at 3-0, I would think that many B12 teams and those around the nation would see BYU as the logical choice for expansion.
