Texas WR skips Football 2011 for Olympics

Looks as if Texas is down 1 WR for the 2011 season, and the guy sounds likea really good athlete. He is dropping out so he can train full time for a 2012 Olympic bid. Stats not huge over 2 seasons, but sounds like could have been a playmaker.

If I had a choice between playing a year of football and then going pro or participating in the Olympics and then going pro, I'd pick the latter in a New York second.

I does not sound like he is dropping out. It sounds like he will red-shirt a year and train for the Olympics with plans to return to UT a year later with 2 years of football eligibility. He apparently had playing time as a true freshman and amassed 600+ yards receiving as a freshman and sophomore. Sounds like a good move for him to have the olympic opportunity - will hurt UT in 2011 - but maybe help them the next two years. Works for me. I wish more of their players that were good enough to contribute like that as true frosh / sophs would opt out next year.

That's a "No Brainer." This Marquise Goodwin, Texas WR won the U.S. National championship Long Jump going over 27'! He's good - really good. He's doing the smart thing & pursuing a great opportunity - participating in the Olympics! I wish him well.



I worked with a guy that was an alternate, as a Decathlete on 2 different U.S. Olympic Teams. Although he never made it to the big show - the whole process is very exciting and builds life long memories. It's really cool to be good enough to be a legitimate contender for an Olympic team.



Too bad for Texas. Go Marquise!!

He'll be missed, that's for sure. Fun to watch, and VERY fast.



He and D.J. Monroe (WR/RB), were the 3rd and 4th legs of our 4 x 100 relay team as well. There was talk that those two were our kick returners. Guess we're down to only D.J. now.



Marquise was a bit of a surprise his freshman year. A walk-on, Mack stated that they weren't for sure if he was even going to play football, until he showed up the first day of two-a-days and then contributed immediately. He was big for us against OU, his true freshman year. He had kind of a sophmore slump last year, probably due to the fact that our qb couldn't get him the ball.



He's a great kid, and a hard worker. I look forward to seeing him don the Red, White, and Blue in the Olympics.

Maybe it will help his football career to wait for a QB who can get the balll to him.
