Who are the Founding Fathers of BYU independence?



Tom Holmoe is one obvious one.

Bronco Mendenhall has to be another.



Can LaVell count, or is he too old now, and is more like William Bradford of the Mayflower or John Smith of Jamestown?

I think of LaVell as the one who laid the foundation of BYU football, but he usually defended the WAC & MWC.

Jimmer has to be there. He is everywhere.

Merrill Bateman and Val Hale, for brokering a crappy, prohibitive deal, with the MWC. Hey even some of the Founding Fathers were problems.

ESPN and the MWC sat down at the negotiating table for re-negotiations on their TV deal. The deal that ESPN proposed was low, really low. The reason it was low was that when ESPN evaluated the MWC's previous contract they came to the conclusion that there was only one school in the MWC that had any real value, BYU. And ESPN came right out and said that to the MWC during negotiations.



Of course we all know that the MWC rejected the offer and started the MTN. BYU agreed to the idea of the MTN because of 2 reasons, 1- Loyalties to Utah. 2- They expected the MTN to be grander then it actually turned out to be.



To summarize: ESPN didn't screw us directly, they wanted us and only us from the very beginning.

That is true. ESPN really only cared about BYU. However, the contract they offered was significantly less money than we had been getting before so even if the conference paid BYU more than every other team, we would have still been taking a substantial pay cut from our last contract. BYU had no choice but to go with the MTN at the time.
