I voted for French since he was the one that was the co-ordinator during the best span ever in BYU's history. It is true that during most of that time Chow was the play caller, it was still French's offense.

I voted French. He was the Off Coord during the Steve Young era. Quite a time. Choosing is hard to do! LOL!

I chose Scovill because he reworked the offense around Marc Wilson's skills when Gifford was injured.





I hope Brandon Doman heads this list in 10 years.

I voted for Scovil because he was the evil genius behind the BYU passing craze. Dude would not take his foot of the gas either. He loved running it up.



Norm was awesome for BYU, but Scovil was the co-architect with LaVell, and in some ways, was the innovator.

Can I change my vote? I've been doing a little reading about Dewey Warren. When LaVell Edwards was hired as BYU's Head Coach in 1972, his experience was completely on the Defensive side of the ball. So LaVell handed the Offense of to Dewey. Dewey knew they couldn't run (didn't have the athletes), so he developed the BYU passing attack with QB Gary Sheide. Dewey left after 2 years. I don't think his numbers are as impressive as others - but he established BYU as a 1st rate passing school. LaVell & Dewey - especially Dewey - were the creative forces behind a great passing tradition @ BYU.

Didn't know about Warren. I voted for Scovil for that reason. I guess the credit goes farther back.

While Warren was an air-it-out guy, it was Scovill who brought in the WCO.

My understanding is - Dewey Warren laid the foundation & established the BYU passing game (sending 5 receivers down field & passing when no one else even thought about it). Back in the 70's college football was "run heavy". "Three yards and a cloud of dust."



Doug Scovil and others refined the BYU passing attack established by Dewey Warren. The foundation for the West Coast Offense was established by Dewey Warren's passing offense.

Under Warren's offense - BYU was setting passing records.



Was Dewey Warren the greatest Offensive Coordinator? No. But - he was the father & creator of BYU's great passing history. A creative originator. He's been forgotten mostly - but he started it all with LaVell.
