Importantce of BYU Football Camps and Recruiting

It appears that the BYU staff places a big emphasis on evaluating a number of prospects at BYU's padded, full-contact football camps. This includes BYU and Junior Day camps held in the first two weeks of June as well as the Poly Camp in Bountiful. They are able to get a first hand look at how the recruits perform in situational conditions and against players that fit the mold of what they need in their program.



In the SL Tribune article by Jay Drew (6/26/11),



Coach DuPaix stated, “Camps are very critical for us. They allow us to evaluate the young men...As you know, we are looking for the right kids who will fit at BYU the right way. We are looking for high academic kids that meet the honor code requirements and so to bring them out and physically evaluate them, and get to know them better, is definitely something that we prefer, something that we really like to have done. It helps us here at BYU.”



Additionally, the Brandon Davies HC incident has not harmed the school’s recruiting efforts but had the opposite effect.



According to Dupaix, “The exposure definitely has been beneficial because now when you talk to a young man, he knows exactly what BYU is. It allows us to identify the kids that are our type of kids, because they understand more what it is to be a BYU kid.”

The ESPN expose Outside the Lines hit up the BYU Honor Code. I thought the piece was just fine, and that Tom Holmoe was a big reason why. Yeah, mistakes get made as the Code is administered by humans, but it is not racist in the least, as some claim in that piece. Of all cases, only 1 is troubling at all.

I feel like we've been waiting for camp recruit news for a while. Been awfully quiet. =(

Yes it has. GMan said he thought we would have 2-3 more commits by last night, but they did not happen, as far as we know. I think 2 of those were to be Butch Pau's and his Servite HS teammate. I assume the 3rd was Williams. None have yet, as far as we know.

Exactly what I was thinking.



Hopefully something comes out soon.

Williams is now going to trip to utah and still has not tripped to sdsu. he won't commit for a while. pau'u waiting concerns me.

I agree on Pau'u waiting. Not sure why. I thought it a great sign that he brought a friend who earned a commit. Perhaps they commit together and Butch is just waiting on his buddy and parents to green light it.



As to Williams, I still like our chances with him, based upon his comments. Utah may pose a concern with the PAC-12 carrot, but if he wants a BYU type social life, Utah can not offer that.

It's been days since camp has been over...DAYS.



I hope the coaches get their plan B's out.

Another camp is going on right now, so things could happen.



I think what is happening now is that Utah has highly sought after recruits, and many want toe Camp experience at other schools. BYU tells kids if they commit, to stop that activity. So some wait so they can get it. They are probably still BYU commits, just want more camp time. And I think we are going to have to get used to this. Recruiting is crazy business, and early commits will still happen, but not for all kids.



I still like our chance with Pau'u,, JLD, and Williams. Perhaps even Lutui, if we finally offer. I am on the fence with Fanaika and Hinds.

i like our kids attending camps and improving their skills even if it is at other schools.

I Dont think we get fanaika. I am not hopeful actually that we land anymore big recruits. Hope I am wrong.

Agreed. I am nervous about Fanaika. I think he is "star struck" with all the big name schools. I think Fanaika s a 50 / 50 shot. UCLA makes me nervous. Thank Heaven they fired Norm Chow or the deal would be done right now!



I'm also hoping "X" will jump on over to the Y after his mission. Long shot I know. But, I think it's possible now that his primary recruiter - Norm Chow, is gone from UCLA.

This is the kind of info I've been waiting for! Do it! Do it!

All I know is that the LB class of recruits BYU is after this year is absolutely amazing. And in our 3-4, they are the vital parts. Look at who we have for 2012:

Interesting mix of mission and non-mission kids as well. Great athleticism in this group, along with speed and ability. Just need to lock up a few more of these guys.

Lawboy, thanks for the list, I was actually just thinking the other day that recruiting on D seems to be linebacker heavy, which is the way it should be for the 3-4 to run smoothly.



Definitely good news about Butch and his JLD. Too bad BYU can't get any polys. :crazy:

I agree that the Football Camps are important at BYU for recruiting. However, the number of kids that attend these are staggering. Unless your child has been contacted by the BYU Football Staff prior to camp for recruitment purposes, don't plan on you child being looked at while he/she attends these camps. The "non-recruited" kids no matter how good will not get a fair shot at showcasing abilities - they'll shadow the recruited and known kid. Typically at the padded camp when teams are divided, you'll have multiple kids at each position (on one team), i.e., 5 RBs, 3 Qb's, 6WR's. So when you have numbers like these, who will be the one showcasing the skills and have the most field time-or touches? Yep the recruited kid.

Is there a school out there that DOESN"T miss on recruits? I mean. Look at Jimmer: everyone missed on him but BYU which speaks more to his work ethic and progress than anything else.



Does ASU hit on all recruits?

EIther sundevil is PK, or a kid who attended a BYU camp, or a parent of a kid who has.



The business of recruiting is pretty simple. BYU targets kids because they have either seen them in person, or have game film on them. If you want your kid who is attending camp to get watched, send a player tape into the coaching staff before camp. It really is not that difficult to do. If they like what they see, they get extra attention, if they do not, then perhaps the diamond in the rough is still more coal than diamond.
