75 ft x 75 ft "Y" banner

I own a significant hill side in Tri-Cities (Eastern Washington). It dawned on me that since the hill is visible to over 100,000 people, it would be a very nice place to hang a large Y banner on game days. How does someone go about getting permission to use the "Y" logo on a banner? Is there anyone in the Tri-Cities area that would like to work with me on this venture? It might be costly to do it right. However, it would make for many proud cougar fans on game day. :)

I don't think a huge banner in Washington would make a lot of sense unless we were playing washington, and then I don't think the project would be worth it unless we playing with a washington team every year.

Word. Out here on the east coast I can't wear my "Y" gear without people asking me if I went to Yale.

Nope. No one in this state knows about BYU. I guess that swirly that I nearly escaped at the hands of Husky fans in 1984 was about something else. At least the members of the five LDS stakes in the Tri-Cities would know what it was. TIC :lol:

I don't see it as any different from a fan flying a flag outside their house, I say go for it.

Having people ask you why you have a banner with a block letter Y on it: priceless.

I loved flying my "Y" flag on game days in Omaha. Me, the Iowa Hawkeye fan down the street and bunch of big red "N"s. I liked to tell people that it made me the most diverse person on the street! :whistle:

As a resident of Pasco, I love this idea. I also have to say that as you know there is a strong contingient of BYU fans in the Tri-Cities. For the UW game, a Bishop in Pasco bought 160+ tickets without knowing who was going to take them. He had no problem finding people willing to fork over the money and we all took over a section in the third deck.



I'm curious, which hill side do you own?



You may want to contact BYU to see if they might help with the banner. I don't know who else would be able to get their hands on a 75'x75' banner, and if you have to have it made, then you will probably need their permission.



You may also want to check with your city to make sure it won't violate some sign ordinance. Then again it may be better to ask forgiveness than ask permission.



I love this idea. WSU has a commercial running right now about how their logo is the most recognizable in college athletics (what are they smoking?!). It also quotes a "fan" saying "It's not about wins and losses..." What?! Then it closes claiming that they are "undefeated fans". WSU cougar fans must be dying for another team to root for. Get the banner and get out the word.

Texas has BYU license plates now. They dont explain our mission, beliefs, our the schools location in the US, but dammit Im still advertising.

Pimp that Y, Tri-cities need to know BYU fans roam the land, they'll feel safer.

Preach on! I construct a 20' x 20' oval Y out of blue Christmas lights each year on my front lawn. A guarantee that each of the K-State fans in my neighborhood (in Kansas) know where the BYU fans live. Football fans will know. Everyone else will wonder, but they don't matter.

Any sign maker/custom printer who is licensed with the National Collegiate Association (or whatever their name is) can create products with BYU logos on it, it really shouldn't be that hard to find someone who is.

i live in Oregon but that is my temple (Columbia River). I am all for it and willing to help. Remember we will be playing against Gonzaga and Portland U.

For those in the Tri-Cities that are interested. I own 2 acres on Little Badger Mountain. It is above the Columbia river Temple and visible from Richland, Pasco, and a good part of Kennewick. It is above Crested Hills, but not part of that home owners association. I suppose that the sign could be as big as we want it, but I'm finding out that it will be expensive. I am unwilling to do a cheap banner as it would be a poor reflection. I suppose that some neighbors might have a fit about it, but it would only be out on game day. Now that the Basketball team will be playing Gonzaga every year, it will be nice for that as well.

I see you are up in the cheap seats, aye. My in-laws just moved off of Morency last week, so I am guessing they used to be in your ward.



That would be a great place a Y logo.



BYU needs to start a program to find good homes for old banners around campus, like the "Tradition, Spirit, Honor" banner that hung of the back of the south scoreboard at LES, or the giant Y's that they hang on the Tanner Building. It would be sweet to get your hands on one of those.

Is your in-law a lawyer that moved here from AZ about a year ago? If so, they lived just about a quarter mile down the hill from me. Very nice folks. Also, there are a couple of Ute fans that live at the bottom of the neighborhood. I got the idea when I was looking out the 6th floor of Kadlec Medical Center in Richland. It became apparent to me that a nice white "y" on a navy blue background draped over that hill would be absolutely beautiful in the fall. What else am I going to do with a steep hill that size? I just need to get the right sign. Again, it has to be a quality banner that makes all BYU fans proud.

That's them. I'm married to their eldest daughter. We've been here 5 years and last year they followed us up here.



It seems like a bunch of people on the steep hillsides use the slopes for Christmas lights, so why can't you use it for a BYU logo. 'Tis the football season (and Gonzaga games).

Former Tri-Citian here (RHS class of 93'). Don't make it back much, but my mom lives right next to the Columbia River Temple. I think it is a great idea! I would guess that there are 5-10K BYU alumni in the Tri-Cities and probably 20K members of the LDS faith who would know exactly what the "Y" means, and most would find pride in it's blatant display. I'm also pretty certain that you wouldn't need permission to display it like that on your own property.



On a side note, just last week I was walking through the grocery store and noticed an older gentlemen wearing a "Y" hat so I properly said "Go Cougs". He gave me a funny look. When I gestured to his hat he said "this Y stands for Yale". I said "oh, what's Yale!"

First area of my mission was Pasco! Fall of '89. That's why there's a temple in the tri-cities - because there were so many baptisms while I was there. :) :whistle: Great place. A few scary areas though. Regarding the sign I say GO for it if you can find the cash. I'll chip in $10 for the cause.
