Poly's and BYU

As I was getting out of my truck this morning I was listening to 1280; OC and Hans were talking about the number of Polynesians that the :utard: are getting. I know we have talked about this subject quite a bit but I was thinking (it hurts when I do that) and I had a few ideas pop into my head. The main idea that I had was, Do you think that Bronco will be the DC for just one more year and then move one of his up and coming guys into the DC position? Howell, Poppinga and then bring in a polynesian coach to help bring more recruits in? I know we have Kaufusi, but it seems that we have fewer poly's than we used to have. Oh and for the record I hope that Vai's blog gets cut from the Dnews. He is such a Ute homer now!!!! Let him keep wearing his red, between him and the whole :utard: coaching staff we have tons of Benedict Arnolds on our hands!!!

I think it is an overblown issue. Utah has focused on recruiting Poly players since McBride took over, and it was a HUGE reason that they started improving. BYU has always recruited Poly players as well. Both schools do, and both schools get loads of them. BYU has more on roster now than when Vai played and will continue to. I think BYU will continue to get many Poly players and so will Utah. Neither will corner the LDS Poly market. Just how it is. BYU appeals to some, Utah to others.

We all know BYU will never get another Poly because we failed to hire an inexperienced Poly as a key position coach.

K I'll be quite we have tons of polynesian's I guess I just hear so much about the frutes getting all these kids "we should" get it seemed like we weren't getting as many as we used to.

I think the issue that is not being fully addressed is the fact that Utah is developing way more D1 talent than ever before. Enough to field loads of kids at BYU, Utah, USU, Weber and SUU, along with the JC's. But the number of top level kids going to BYU and Utah continues to go up. Neither school will get them all because neither school needs them all. Both schools get their share. It is usually only a op 3-4 where there is a true battle each year, and those get so overblown. I will lose zero sleep over not locking up an 18 year old kid. Not worth it, no matter how much upside they might have.

The other obvious aspect is that not all of the Poly kids are good fits at the Y. Consider Kona Schwenke, Manti Teo, Haloti Ngata, etc. that chose other schools. The Y experience was not for them even though we would have greatly benefited from their skill on the field. Listen to the difference in the interview with Kesni Tausinga vs Harvey Langi - one is very interested in serving a mission and drawing from the spiritual strength he will get at the Y and the other - well playing time and less restrictive conditions.

I think BYU needs to start landing kids in the nfl if they really want to go to then ex level in recruiting. i think this is a big reason we lost out on hansen. that and the fact that we were stacked at qb.

Yes, because Utah has had a ton of success sending QBs to the NFL.

The Y has a surprising number of players in the NFL even if they don't get drafted.

I think JL is saying Hansen thought he had a better shot making the NFL as a LB coming out of UU. I don't think he is right.

So now that i'm thinking about it more, I guess after not getting ta'o and schwenke, it seemed to me that we were missing out. But then it hit me talent i doesn't always make up for subpar coaching. A la notre dame. At the end of the day our cougs just need to keep doing what they are doing and we'll be fine. Because a lot of our guys could have possibly been 3 or 4 star guys (adam hine) if they hadn't committed so early. I guess I started this thread because I was pissed about vai's blog and his apparent abandonment of the cougs for the frutes because he feels polynesian coaches are more appreciated/wanted at the u.

I think you know what i meant. hansen knew that if he didn't get to play qb, that he would still be put in a good position playing for utah's defense in terms of getting drafted in the nfl. they have drafted a lot of defensive players in the nfl as of late, more than byu.
