The Depth of BYU LBs in 2011

Given our depth, I believe that at least 8 will see significant playing time and this group should really wear out the RB, QB with constant pressure.



Projected Starters:



Sam: Jordan Pendleton (Sr)or Kyle Van Noy (So), Alani Fua (RS Fr)

Buck: Brandon Ogletree (Jr) or Spencer Hadley (So), Aveni Leung-Wai (Sr)

Will: Jameson Frazier (Sr) or Jadon Wagner (Sr), Ziggy Ansah (So)

Mike: Uona Kaveinga (Jr), Austen Jorgenson (Jr), Tyler Beck (RS Fr)

Didn't Jadon Wagner leave the program. I bet KVN is the back up at both OLBs.

Jadon was drafted by the CFL (6th round), but has indicated that he would return for his senior year.

That is contrary to the official BYU release on Wagner, who is not currently listed on the roster.

I think your info is outdated, byucougar1, Wagner is up in Canada now and not planning on returning.

Then that is a change, last I heard he came back after the draft.

Gary D Millward, contributing writer for True Blue Cougars, noted Wagner would return as of the writing of his 6/20/11 article about the LBs.

I stand corrected! I had heard he was going with the CFL, but I can see that he is back in Provo.

Its astounding to me that KVN would be a backup. I get a healthy JP and I sort of get JF, but how can you keep an elite athlete like that off the field? Man do we have it good or what? Heres to a healthy JP. I was not optimistic given the severity.

The BYU Prospectus that they released a couple weeks ago said that he was selected by the CFL but has opted to return.

I remember reading somewhere in an official BYU something-or-other (or maybe a CougarTracks?) that he changed his mind about the senior season, but I couldn't find it. Maybe this will do?

I really don't see how KVN is a back-up this year either after what he showed last year. He should start over JF in my opinion

What's the story with stout? He injured? Because he looked good when he got in last year. Also with regards to Wagner. How come you can be drafted in the cfl and come back to college ? You can't do that with the NFL. If you don't withdraw your name before the deadline, your college career is over.

I'm not positive with respect to the whole CFL thing, but in basketball you can always come back if you don't hire an agent, I'd assume that it's similar, but who knows?

The NFL has a buddy-buddy relationship with the NCAA and has influenced some of the amateurship/eligibility rules to ensure that players in the draft go to the NFL instead of teams picking players who don't want to play for that team and would rather play another year of college football for free than play for the Lions or Bengals. Some of the rules are NFL specific.



The pro-sports in general ways to lose your eligibility:

1. You agree orally or in writing to be represented by an agent or any individual acting on behalf of the agent.

2. You (or any of your relatives or friends) accept any benefits from an agent, a prospective agent or any individual acting on behalf of the agent (Reggie Bush).

3. You tryout with a professional team during the academic year and miss class.





The NFL-specific ways to lose your eligibility:

1. You participate in a tryout with an NFL team that lasts longer than 48 hours, which you have not paid for out of your own pocket.

2. You enter the draft AND do NOT declare your intention to resume intercollegiate participation within 72-hours following the NFL draft declaration date.



The CFL just doesn't have the clout to get their own rules across, and the cost to the CFL teams for a draft pick not arriving for another year or two aren't as great as when NFL teams waste picks.

Stout is going to redshirt this year.

Zac Stout, Sophomore (Redshirting)



Stout is redshirting this year due to an off-season surgery he had shortly after spring ball. The injuries were making Stout ineffective. Stout will not be serving a mission so he will be playing the next three years starting in 2012. A talented Linebacker prospect from Oaks Christian High in California, Stout saw time in 10 games in his true Freshman season, recording 19 tackles.

I think this is a good year for Stout to RS. We do have less depth/experience in the middle than we have on the outsides at LB, but the cover we have behind Kaveinga and Tree is good. On the outsides, the depth is great. But both Treee and Kav are juniors, so that saves a year to get more out of Stout in the future.



I think we will see KVN playing all over the field at LB this year. We have so many really great athletes at ILB right now. Only real issue is health with JP, which is a concern. But with JP. KVN, JF and Wagner, we are set for any run or pass scenario. I love the options this gives Bronco to be aggressive with this group. If the front 3 do their job, this group should dominate.

My recollection is something about his status or something he wrote on facebook said he would be back for his senior year.



Not sure about the technicalities and how he can be drafted and still be eligible.
