Chase Hansen commits to Utah

Brandon Gurney just reported on Twitter that chase hansen committed to Utah. They must have offered him as a QB instead of a safety like BYU

He said PAC-12 and Norm Chow were reasons. Utah did offer his as QB, BYU did not. Honestly BYU did not want him as a QB, so while I would have loved him to comit as a safety/OLB prospect, I do not feel bad about losing him as a QB prospect.

Yeah, because we all know that when Kwhitt offers you at one position, he never changes position on you once you're in camp.

Well, it was just a verbal. Could always change his mind between now and LOI day. Of course, after Utah has huge struggles at QB this year (they will), might solidify it in his own mind. He is the 2nd QB to commit in this class, but the other is not a mission kid.



Puts more emphasis on Pau'a and Ah-Ching now. Perhaps even Hinds. Need 2 of those 3.

We lost him because utah offered as qb. simple as that. they will not play him there but he fell for it.



This is the first time I have felt like utah going to the pac12 is really going to start helping them with recruiting. this loss hurts worse than any recently for me.



we need to land these guys. while one guy is not a huge loss, it is concerning. hope he changes his mind after we go undefeated this year and utah sucks. 8)

It absolutely does. Landing Hinds just became more important.

He has a long time to make his real decision. And by the time he gets back Norm Chow will have retired.

hopefull we can start getting more guys into the nfl. i think this is really helping utah. it sounds like chase is thinking, hey i could play qb and if that doesn't work out who cares, kwitt is an excellent defense coach who gets guys ready for the nfl.



i hate that we lost this kid. he dad played at byu and two of his uncles. he is by his own admission a byu family. crazy.

I don't understand the state-wide armegedon (for BYU fans) and triumph (for U fans) as a result of this kid. A good number of our '12 recruits chose BYU over the U, and nobody said anything about the pac12 variable then, we lose one kid and everyone freaks out. Every year we lose some of these fence-sitters and win some. Everything is ok. I would worry more if it were Hinds, but even then i'm not worried about the state of our recruiting. BYU will get who they get and lose those that aren't BYU boys (Afalava).

very true. i think it was more a product of that byu is stacked at qb and utah sucks at qb more than anything but the reason it is a big deal is because byu usually always gets these guys. he is a byu guy. his dad and two uncles played at byu. he grew up a byu fan and he went to utah because of what utah has going for them. he said they had more to offer him. that is not normal and could signal a shift in recruiting here in utah.



whether it plays out that way or not only time will tell. but i think that is why most are making it a big deal.

I actually respect how Utah lies to their recruits, tells them they will be a QB and then turns them into Defensive standouts (a la Paul Kruger)

Wow, at TBS you'd think someone's grandma died at all the despair over this loss. When we had the score of QB recruits I knew we'd arrived on shaky ground in landing Hansen, but when your father and two of your uncles consider the Pukes as their rival enemies, it's got to be hard. There is nothing like this situation anywhere in this country where families are constantly confronted on all sides of this rivalry.



Brandon Gurney said it best when he said, "I think Mangum committing to BYU had a big impact here. They're on exactly the same time-line with both leaving for missions straight out of HS"



I think we're feeling the impact of finding out in the same week that Afalava has his eyes set for Utah. Thats some powerful rejection all in one week. It has set people to imagine the potential of losing Hinds too to Utah and those three together makes it hard to swallow.

I'm concerned about Troy Hinds not coming to Junior Day. I hope the Cougar Coaches are dialing up the personal attention on Hinds. Lots of Cougar love.

Sheesh.... is this guy the next detmer or something? Time to move on to bigger and better things. It must be the off-season.

I read an article about Chase Hansen pretty carefully. Chase said there were 2 things that won him over to the Yewts:



#1 Norm Chow. I understand that. Norm has "been there done that." He's been @ BYU, USC, UCLA, the NFL. I can understand that when Norm got Chase into a room for 30 minutes & talked big time football to High School kid - his eyes glazed over & he closed the deal.



#2 Chase pointed to the direction of Yewt Football. What does that mean? That's the PAC-12, West Coast media & the opportunity to on the 'Big Stage." Again - all glitzy, heady & sexy stuff for a High School kid.



But - Chase is going on a mission straight out of High School. He'll have 2 years to throttle back emotionally, watch the Yewts get hammered & thrashed in the PAC-12 & be a very average team that nobody cares about. He'll also see BYU getting National exposure & establishing themselves as a legit National program.



Just my .02 cents. But I believe it will be true.

I think what is happening and why so much hand wringing over this one is because many BYU fans are finally realizing that Utah getting the PAC-12 invite is actually helping them with recruiting LDS kids, when they go head to head with BYU. We have seen BYU lose kids to Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA, etc., but never to Utah for that reason, and now we are--and we will continue to. It is a fact of life now.



BYU wanted him as an OLB, a position we tend to recruit well enough for, so not a huge loss. If he was a skill player, I would feel it more, but an LB/safety loss does not kill me in the least. Especially when the kids wants to play QB.



On the flip side, our new Indy deal and ESPN games will also open doors for us with other kids. See the Jr Day signings. So it cuts both ways now, and we need to take the bad with the good. The good will outweigh the bad by far, unless you choose to dwell on a few losses. Hansen may be a solid BYU type player, but just 1 kid. 17 at hat. Not too upset about it. BYU recruits well. REally well.

Norm Chow is 65. Is he even going to be around in two years when Hansen is back? I really wouldn't be surprised to see him come to BYU post-mission - especially if Chow is gone.

I suspect CHow gives Utah 5 years. Norm probably looks at Utah as his place of retirement. So unless he gets run by the Yewts, I expect his there until 2016. For details, see JoPa, Bowden, etc.

I give Norm 3-5 years. He would retire @ 68 to 70. I can't imagine Norm took the job expecting to work 2 & pull the plug. I don't see Norm following in the foot steps of Bobby Bowden (79 when forced to retire) or Joe Paterno (84 now).
