Anyone who thinks Bronco Mendenhall

isn't fully invested in recruiting is full of it.



Sorry, I know that seems pretty random. But I was recently reminded that, despite what certain posters and certain articles say, Bronco DOES leave Provo to recruit, and he sells his program HARD.

I think Bronco recruits harder now than he did a few years back. I think he really is renewed this year, in all levels. I also think Bronco knows how to recruit for BYU, how to sell BYU, and his staff is on board with it. BYU is a unique place, and that is emphasized in recruiting. It hurts with some kids, but helps with others. But to say BYU hides the HC, as the deadspin guy claimed, is total BS. BYU sells the HC, and they do not hide from it.

I think some sky-is-falling fans read his philosophy of "we want the players to recruit BYU" as some indication that Bronco spends the recruiting season sitting in his office waiting for the world to beat a path to his better mousetrap.

This is right on. Bronco is genuine and a genius. He is the perfect coach for byu. I don't always agree with him and think he has weaknesses but I wouldn't want any other coach. He does an excellent job selling buy and recruiting. I love his approach. He is an EXCELLENT recruiter. I agree with mcgregor 100 percent.



He is definitely rejuvenated this year. The whole team is.

Lavell Edwards used to be called the closer because of how he'd make visits late in the process and get kids to commit; as time went on this didn't happen as much.



While I don't think Bronco is a poor recruiter by any means, I do think he tends to keep athletes and families at arms reach until the staff has decided they really have to have a player or that Bronco is needed to make the deal happen.



There are other head coaches that are constantly on the horn, making every possible visit under the sun, etc. (even cheating, see Lane Kiffin) Bronco is not one of those. He picks his spots and that's just his style.



The biggest impact he's made has been on setting the tone for how they recruit, who they recruit, and what message is to be sent to kids about BYU, etc. That has paid dividends in rentention and quality of player, but Bronco is not a guy that is out on the road very much. He tries to make at least one trip to the hometown of every kid they bring in, but sometimes this is at the end of the process. (see Drew Philips, Kori Gaines, Blair Tushaus for example; all had basically committed when Bronco made his home visit to them... and once he does, he hammers home the same things they had been told... in the case of Drew Philips, that meant "don't take a visit to Michigan, etc.")

Dupaix, Doman, and Bronco should get us in top 25 every year in recruiting classes

I think anyone would be hard pressed to find another HC that recruits harder than Bronco. Reading about what he expects from his team and especially his defense, I am certain he gives at least as much in recruiting/evaluating high school players.

I don't know if they would get these top ranked recruiting class-mostly because it appears once a recruit accepts the BYU offer they seem to be evaluated less and hyped less. Kind of a stigma of accepting an offer by a "mid-major" (yeah BYU a mid major and Duke etc BCS worthy :roll: )



But it doesn't phase me because Bronco is finding the right pieces for his team and not necessarily the best players out there.



I honestly believe Bronco and BYU are going to win a national championship one of these years.

Recruiting tends to focus on certain areas, like Florida, Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, etc. Utah is starting to get some love from evaluators, and our classes have seen a bump as a result. It used to be that most Utah athletes were 2*, maybe a 3*, but now that the PAC12 has entered, and Utah has produced many great players, talent raters are taking notice. Late to the party, of course, but taking notice. High school football in Utah has improved dramatically the last decade in terms of coaching and talent. And that only helps BYU because we dominate the Utah market, and the core of our classes the last few years have been Utah kids. That really helps recruiting as well to have a local base to draw from.

Very true because basically Mendenhall is in the game to suceed while all these other coaches are in the game to win and they hope they suceed as a by-product. There is a difference.

Given how Bronco recruits, he doesn't pay much attention to the stars or offers from other schools, as part of his evaluation. He is looking at talent, character and how the player fits into his system.



Under his leadership, he has always taken the approach to commit quite a few players early in the year before they get offers from some of the bigger schools. He has always stated that once you commit, you don't take trips to other schools - you have given your word and you have the Y's in reciprocation. This approach leads to solid commits with very few surprises when signing day occurs.

Huge OL commit from Davis High. He camped at Utah this week...made strange comments about options open, in case somehthing happens with BYU. Has to be grades.
