ESPN and Y - FB TV Exposure

Currently ESPN will broadcast 7 BYU football games on the 2011 schedule — 4 games on ESPN and 3 on ESPN2. Listed below are the games that have been scheduled thus far for broadcast.

This will never work. Like anyone is going to want to play BYU once we go independent!

Just about cried... (ok I cried a little) when I saw that we are on ESPN 7 times this year!!!!!! :crazy: I can't believe the amount of games that will be nationally televised. I remember when the :sick: (mtn) used to say that they had nationally televised games. Boy, what a crock that statement was! Not to be a debbie downer but I think the rest of the games will be on our network. Wait was OSU game on that list? That is possibly an eighth game on ESPN if it wasn't listed. Oh wait I'm not being a debbie downer because the games that our on our network will reach many more homes than the :sick: and the HD will be sweet! Here we come BCS and big time recruits!

First, all those games are either on ESPN or ESPN2. No games on ESPNU or the online only option.

Second, no mid-week games. That was a big fear of many fans, including myself. There are 5 games on Saturday and 2 (TCU-UCF) on Friday night.

And remember this is just the first year, and we were scrambling for opponents. Five years from now we could be on ESPN just about every week.

I'm liking where this is heading. I was relieved to get the confirmation that the Hawaii game was picked up by ESPN. As a season ticket holder I'm really not affected by how the home games are broadcast. At this point we just need to receive the finalized plans for what channel the Oregon State game will be broadcast on. I'm happy as long as I'm able to see every BYU game live. I don't care if the away game is on the Mtn, Vs, BYUtv, KJAZZ, KSL, just make sure they are on TV.



Last year Utah had an away game at San Jose State not broadcast. That would suck. The last time BYU had that problem was when we played at Cal in 2001 I believe. There was some TV contract issue so initially the game wasn't going to be on the air at all. Then an agreement was made where they were able to air the game on a 30 minute delay. That sucked, but at least the game was on.



TV coverage for away games will make me nervous each year. I like to go to one away game a year and I'd be pissed if I had to go to somewhere like Los Cruses, NM for my one game because the game was not going to be on TV.

The Utah State game is also on Friday night. We have back to back Friday night games with UCF and then USU. I believe there are no other games being played during the USU game.

When the ESPN TV deal was arranged in August 2010, BYU was guaranteed at least three home games on the ESPN family of networks at an estimated $800,000 to $1.5 million per game. With seven games scheduled for ESPN in 2011, that's approximately five to $10 million to the athletic budget.



I believe that the remaining five BYU games could be shown on BYU-TV.



Regarding future opponents:



Six-game series contract with Notre Dame (games to be played between 2012 and 2020).



Georgia Tech, Boise State and West Virginia are also confirmed future BYU opponents.

Doesn't ESPN still have the option of broadcasting a home game on ESPN-U? I'm excited to see how BYUtv handles the broadcasting of the games it gets rights to.

There are 5 games that where broadcasting is to be announced. They are:]



Oct 8 vs. San Jose State (who Utah last year played at home and it wasn't on TV). This will either be an ESPNU game or on BYUtv.



Oct 15 at Oregon State. This falls under the Pac-12 TV contracts and could end up anywhere from ABC (not likely), ESPN or ESPN2 (slightly more likely, depends on other games that day in the Pac-12), ESPNU or Fox Sports (more likely Fox Sports) or the ever popular Versus. If it is not picked up by one of those carriers, I wonder if the Pac-12 will let BYUtv broadcast it. This is the first game on the schedule that may not be on TV.



Oct 22 vs Idaho State. This will be a BYUtv game, no doubt about it. ESPN will not be putting a 1-AA school on it's networks in the middle of October. Besides, the contract calls for 1 home game that is guaranteed to be played on BYUtv, so this is the guarantee.



Nov 12 vs Idaho. It is either an ESPNU game (not likely) or BYUtv.



Nov 19 vs New Mexica State. Same as above, only I'm thinking almost 100% BYUtv.



It's really a good thing that we got out of the Lousiana Tech game, because I'm almost 100% certain that would not have been broadcast on anything but the internet. I don't see BYUtv taking the truck to Rustin, and ESPN wasn't going to put that UGLY game on.

According to the ESPN contract, as I read it, we are gauranteed at least one more home game on ESPNU or better. My guess is it will be the San Jose State game, maybe the New Mexico State game. I agree with those that say that we can pretty much guarantee that Idaho State will be on BYUtv. That leaves three games up in the air, one of which is the OSU game, which at the bare minimum should be picked up by Versus or FSN.



Also, I do wonder if the contract stipulates when ESPN pays us... just for the home games or for every appearance. My guess would be the former. Still, even at only 4 home games a year, we're looking at approximately $6 million a year just from the football contract. That doesn't include neutral games that could get scheduled each year like OU or TCU which are more likley in the $1.5-2 million range. Throw in the basketball contract and the athletic budget won't be hurting for money any time soon, even if it still isn't going to be approaching anywhere near the likes of a upper mid-tier BCS school.

I think after 1 or 2 BcS games we should abandon ESPN and go to a conference that suffocates...oh wait, BS did that already...suckers!

Here is a link with a table showing all the football Lineups for each weekend. The Hawaii v. BYU matchup will have some stiff competition for tv time due to all the match ups and conference championship games.

Most of these games are on Primetime in the East, so exposure will not be an issue. BYU has an opportunity here, and now they need to win games. WE are not hidden at random times. Good times slots. Gotta make the most of it.

What are the chances we get a national broadcast with the OSU game?



That would be weird (or completely logical) if the only game that doesn't get a national broadcast is with a Pac12 school. Looks like the frUtes might not be headed to greener pastures after all.

Silly question... So on all these ESPN and ESPN2 games, is it regional coverage? I seem to remember where they will televise 2 or 3 games and whatever region you're in, thats the game you get. Or are these National games? I guess it would still be on ESPN3 however.
