BYU and WCC about to announce record # of televised games

I hate they say non BcS for b-ball but its happening. BYU will have several nationally televised games, and more then utah in two sports!! Ha!

When we were in the MWC, did the TV package throw both FB and BB in together? If it did, which I believe, then our FB contract alone has already way outpaced the whole MWC package and now we're going to get desert with a separate contract just for BB.

It'll be interesting to see the timing of these games. Most WCC games in the past have tipped off at 9 or 10 PM Pacific, which is midnight or 1AM Eastern.



The WCC has had a good number of games on ESPN in the past, but they've been the ones I've watched to cure insomnia.

48 appearances by WCC men's basketball teams this year, an estimated 12 of which will go to BYU. That ain't too shabby, especially with BYUtv picking up the slack.



I would have liked to have seen a Wednesday/Saturday conference sched but won't complain one iota about a Thursday/Saturday lineup.



Even if you figure that this TV deal is only worth about 1 million per school per year (I don't know if that is a high or low estimate), along with the say 8 million from the football deal and LES/MC combined ticket revenue of say 12 million, we are looking at a significant boost in the AD budget. Due to higher expectations and greater exposure than ever before, you know there is going to be a lot of pressure on the boosters to help the team rise to the opportunities at hand. I think we're going to see a huge increase in booster donations too.

Bad news: 48 "appearances" is only as few as 24 games, as BYU-Gonzaga counts as one appearance for EACH team.

I don't see that as bad news really. How many of WCC conference games do we really think they are going to pick up? You can pretty much guarantee that each of the games in the BYU/GU, BYU/SMC, GU/SMC, series will be picked up so that's 6 games right there or 12 appearances. I doubt they waste many of the rest of the remaining appearances on WCC conference games. Certainly no more than 10 or 5 games. That leaves around 24 appearances to split evenly amongst BYU/GU/SMC or unevenly depending on who has the best non-con schedule to offer. At this point, we don't know if that's BYU or not but Wilner has said he thinks BYU will at least be seen 12 times this season. And if I read it right, conference tourney games don't count against the 48.

The contract will not be 1 million per year per team. The mtn deal was $1 mill per team for all sports, and it was about double what any other non-bcs conference was getting for their entire package. I would guess maybe 300k per team at the high end. Which for most WCC schools, that would be great.

We made fun of the MWC's new logo that they will use, but at least they were proactive enough to have shown it. The WCC has not shown what update to their logo we'll see come the first week of July if any. Are we just going to be another dot on the logo they currently have? I'm not saying that is bad, but it might be nice to know.

You may be right but don't be so sure though that it isn't near $1 million per. True the contract doesn't include football. But do you think the Big East's contract is less than $1 million each for each Basketball-only school? I'm not trying to equate the two conferences but you are using numbers that are almost a decade old. The last Pac-10/SEC/Big XII deals weren't as good as the ones just signed either. That's what happens every year as college athletics becomes more and more popular. It's getting to the point where you could argue that the college games are more popular than their professional counterparts.



As I recall, the last WAC deal wasn't too shabby before that conference got obliterated and while it did include football and BSU, neither compares to the national brand that BYU Athletics and Gonzaga Basketball carry. And finally, generally speaking, they way these TV companies get conferences signed on to such a large contract is by promising them money that sounds like a lot right now, but won't necessarily 6-10 years down the road. If the WCC didn't just get a sweetheart deal from ESPN, I doubt they would have signed an 8 year deal. They could have just signed a 2 year deal and hoped that their brand would grow enough over the next couple of years with BYU, Gonzaga and Saint Mary's leading the way that they could get a better deal down the road, either from ESPN or someone willing to pay more at that time.



Anyway, yeah, 1 million per probably is a tad high, but I would be shocked to find out it was any less than $500,000 given the length of the contract and huge potential for growth the conference has.

All you need to know about the WACs tv package is that Boise left that to go to the MWC. They will be getting about double the money because of that decision.

well, that was before BYU, tcu and utah left for greener pastures. Who knows what the next mtn deal will hold for BSU. I don't know if people are going to be lining up demanding that the "new and improved" mtn channel is in their lineup.

I don't think that BYU should have a bigger spot on the logo. Just getting more games televised is enough for me.

Last year ESPN/2/U picked up 14 conference games (not including the WCC Tourney)



They're not wasting appearances. We are now GUARANTEED 48 appearances, that is a minimum, not a maximum.



We've been guaranteed I believe 24 appearances in the past, but averaged about 38. So I wouldn't be shocked if the league had 60 appearances.



On top of this many teams in the league have regional tv deals. In addition BYUtv won't be treated the same way it was in the MWC.



This deal is better than the Missouri Valley and the A-10. No non-BCS conference has ever gotten a tv deal like this.



Don't forget international exposure as well.

As a Saint Mary's fan, I can tell you SMC was on ESPN/2/U 12 times in the regular season last year. (Despite having an average OOC schedule)



This was under the old deal, the new deal (no FDR) :P will be much sweeter.



I'm going to make a prediction and say that the WCC will surpass the MWC in the next year, or next few years. The main reason being their loss, and our addition, of BYU.

Thanks for the info smc... Good stuff. I think you're right, people are going to be surprised when the WCC passes the MWC in basketball play. That will be one more reason the MWC will have to lament the loss of BYU when the realize how great things could have been had they just bent a little for BYU.



WCC has been VERY good to BYU so far.

Adding BYU raises the bar in every single sport, and I wouldn't have it any other way.



I can't wait for next basketball season. The new exposure and competition level will help everyone's recruiting and at the top, tournament seeding.



The mid-tier teams will be vastly improved over previous years



Portland is a lock to win 20 games every year. They lose a lot, but return a really athletic pg Tim Douglas, and a sharpshooter Nemanja Mitrovic



Santa Clara won 24 games last year. They return their top 3 scorers, including Kevin Foster who is a stud, and averaged 20ppg over the last 2 seasons.



USF won 19 games, and returns pretty much their whole roster. They were very inexperienced and lost a few early gimme games, I think next year they'll be in the 20 win-club.



I expect GU, SMC, and BYU will each win 25 plus. I wouldn't be surprised if we all got an invitation to the tourney this time around either.
