CougarbibI looked at Hawaiian Airlines fares just out of curiosity. Vegas to Honolulu is $284 at best each way around Dec 3rd weekend. Los Angeles is $269 each way at best for that time frame. Orbitz or Priceline.com, Travelocity, etc. may have something better from the city where you live - but the point is airfare to Hawaii is very seasonal and around Thanksgiving and Christmas, Spring Break, and Summer are when it goes the highest. So plan ahead. This will proably get worse, the closer to game week it gets. I will post restaurant recommendations, tourist suggestions, and try to find a hotel that will give discounted rates, if anyone wants. Hotels, too, are seasonal. If you use Priceline.com, etc. for Hotels - my experience is that you should add a Star for tourist destinations like Honolulu. In other words a 2 1/2* here will not be as nice as a 2 1/2* in SLC. In SLC you would get a Mariott Courtyard or something close to that quality. Here you will get something you have never heard of. It will be clean though and Hawaii is pretty safe.
The Stadium is not actually near the University or waikiki - so you will need ground transportation. Almost every hotel on Oahu is in Waikiki or near to Waikiki. THere is a very nice Mariott at Ko'olina on west Oahu - it is very expensive though and not very near the stadium. Oahu is not huge. So Ko'olina or Wailiki are only about 20-30 minutes away if you avoid traffic by going early. I could shuttle a few people in my beat up old Ford Expedition if I still have it in December - I would have sold it by now but my wife sems to think it is one of the kids and the other kids have all left the nest. There is also a Resort Hotel at Turtle Bay - beautiful, nice, and expensive but convenient to the famous North Shore surfing beaches like Sunset Beach.
We have family friends that run "Sea Breeze" - for water activities like going up in a parachute behind a boat or renting jet skiis. I will ask them if they can give a BYU fan discount. The wife and daughter are members of the Church and the sons went to school with my son and may have studied English under Ms Chow.
This timeframe is far enough from TG and XMAS that you should be reasonably OK. But airfare is already a little above normal due to the season and I have seen it more than double this amount when trying to get reservations at the last minute during that season (but some times it isn't - just depends on luck and timing). There are times of the year when you can get Airfare for under $200 each way from Los Angeles or Las Vegas, so it is already a little high. Try the Hawaiian site and sometimes cities like Portland or Sacramento might be cheaper - sometimes higher. Hawaiian does not fly tdirectly to SLC. I usually use Priceline.com, Orbitz, Travelocity, etc. when I fly places like SLC where Hawaiian does not go.
