14th Game Poll

If this season goes even better than I am expecting it to go and we get to our Bowl game at the end of the year in our 13th game of the year and Heaps ends up just short of breaking the single season NCAA Division I (BCS) record for passing yards or touch downs - will you be happy or sad that we didn't bring in some patsy during the regular season for that "extra" game the "Hawaii" rule gives us so that he could add on 400-500 easy yards and 6 or 7 easy touchdowns? This is not intended to be a simple or smart question. an extra game brings risk of injury to players and takes away a week to prepare for one of the other games (just wondering). I love seeing as many BYU games or even practices as I can get but also know that one loss - even a fluke - blows up the national rankings and undefeated season and BCS Bowl hopes and dreams. But BYU QBs have not set any individual records to speak of in quite a while and several of those set by the greats have been finally broken by QBs at other schools like Houston, Hawaii, etc. And - it would help career records too if Heaps sticks around. And I know I will get killed for suggesting such a thing, but at 6-1 and being a little bit skinny - I do not see Heaps going to the NFL early. So career stats may end up mattering a lot.

If I could be assured that there would be no injuries and that we would win - this would be an easy decision.

What he does in his Sophomore season will be exceeded by what he does as a Junior and Senior.

Whether Heaps would have broken a record or not with the 13th regular season game doesn't make me upset. I'm upset that we didn't play the 13th game so that there was less BYU football to watch.



I'm more upset that Ty Detmer's records do not include the bowl game stats and his records were broken by players who's stats do include the bowl games. I've never looked to see if Ty would still hold any of the records had his bowls been included or not...

at quick glance Detmer had 16,206 yds passing & 127td passes including bowl games

Timmy Chang had 17,072 & 134 td passes

Hawaii is allowed 13 games most years plus the bowl game. Chang also received a medical redshirt. He had 53 career games in which he started 50. Additionally the NCAA implemented overtime after Detmer's time. Chang was involved in at least 2 OT games that I could find including a triple OT game in the 2003 Hawaii bowl (so maybe OT adds 50-75 yards to his total...)



Detmer's stats count for 48 total regular season career games. His freshman year he started one game and only had 1,252 passing yards. So basically Chang ended up with almost a full season of extra games to break Detmer's record due to Detmer not getting the playing time as a freshman.



Here is a scary stat: Detmer had one start and passed for 1,252 yard as a RSfreshman. Heaps started 10 games and played in all 13 as a freshman and had 2,316 yards passing...

Why is this stat scary? In order to pass Detmer in passing yards, Heaps will need to average 4,238 yards passing a season for the next three years. BYU QBs have produced a grand total of four seasons with that many yards. In fact, only five BYU QBs have ever reached even 4,000 yards passing. Heaps may get to 13,000 yards passing, but he's not going to get much closer to Detmer.

Agreed, especially because of the way we now balance the run with the pass a lot more and play better defense, and therefore can control the clock, the tempo, and don't have to throw all game long to try to catch up.



Of course, I could be wrong, and Doman could decide he wants to go all-aerial. But based on the number and quality of ball carriers and blockers, I really doubt that will happen. If a QB needs 4,000 yards in a season, that is more likely a knock on our defense and running game than it is an indication of how good our passing game is.

McMahon, 1980: 4,571

Bosco, 1985: 4,273

Detmer, 1989, 90, 91: 4,560; 5,188; 4,031

Sarkisian, 1996: 4,027



Beck would have gone over 4,000 in 2006 if he had not sat out the Utah State game.



And while we are on it, Sarkisian did need 14 games in 1996 to reach 4,000.

Actually Sark needed 15 games to reach 4,000 (unless you are not including the bowl game stats)...

This all underscores Detmer's three year consecutive run given that it has only happened once and only in a 14-1 season since Detmer. Note that the level of competition in Detmer's senior year slowed down his numbers slightly, but he still eclipsed 4,000.
