Memo to Holmoe: Read this. BYU needs to do this.

This is an article Wrubell posted on Twitter, but I think this is what BYU needs to do. Hope Tom Holmoe and BYU do this, and with a long, detailed survey, and not just to Legacy members. I think a survey is in order to enhance the GameDay experience and to see what the fans want. If BYU is going to enter the world of big time football, it is time they act like it on GameDay. Changes can be made to improve the experience.



Listen to your fans. Ole MIss did it, and I can not wait to get to this game to see it.

I can make a suggestion for a change at LES. Now that we are making way more money on the TV deal, can we stop with all the stupid sponsorships of everything imaginable? IMO, it makes the program look small time. Who cares who is sponsoring the 3rd third-down in the 3rd quarter that has more than 3 yards to go?

Umm... where do you think all this money comes from? Sponsorships. ESPN doesn't just create their money from thin air. They sell advertising. Why do you want to eliminate a revenue stream? Because of the two seconds it takes to hear a sponsor's name?



Newsflash, every sports team looks to maximize sponsorships and revenue.

The thread is about game day atmosphere, not people sitting at home watching on TV. I am talking about the sponsorships that are constantly announced over the PA at LES during a game. It is small time and has absoultely nothing to do with ESPN on-air sponsors, commercials, or advertising.



BYU is hardly the only team I have seen live. Sponsorships at LES are over the top.

Again, why do you want to eliminate a revenue stream? Because it annoys you? Does it really? You really can't enjoy a game at the LES because of a handful of sponsorship announcements?

The Ernst extra point, etc. Yeah, it is cheesy. But so are all the ill timed advertisements on the jumbotron. I get some are needed. Do them pre-game, half-time, etc. But 4th quarter--dump them. Buzz kill in the stadium, especially those horrible Cosmo movies. BYU can improve the game day experience for fans. Plus, advertisers might want to know that their ads get a negative response due to the timing and basically diminish the value of that investment as a result.

The atrocious Cosmo movies were done btw quarters. Those could be done away with and the film majors who created them should receive failing grades for those semesters.

The Cosmo video always aired right before the 4th quarter. And it drained the energy out of LES every time, except for year 1. Too long, too cheesy, too much Utah. They were embarrassing.



I love what Camp Randall does before the 4th stadium. The BYU student section is lame. What cool traditions have they developed other the years worth keeping? Throwing tortillas? Popcorn popping? Showing up late? The StormTrooper march is sorta cool, but that is it. It can improve.

Last year, they had jumbo tron adds running right before the team came out. You had the cheer leaders and the band trying to get the whole B-Y-U-Cougars chant going, but it kept getting drowned out by the adds. Who plays jumbo tron adds when you are getting the fans revved up for the team to come out?

I like the band intro at the beginning of the game with the players storming out of the tunnel with flag bearer from the past...the parking lot shindig thingy KSL puts on is ok, my kids like it but I am not much for standing in line for a keychain when I could be in my seat watching the warm ups or browsing the rosters...I re-watched the Miami game the other day and relized then just how awful the crowd as become, I understand it was a huge game. But the atmosphere was electric, signs everywhere!! Ppl standing up and cheering the whole time...now the student section will hopefully improve next year when they are all together, they better!...I think there def needs to be a blue or white out effort somewhere in the season



In summary...don't change the intro, actually do a real tailgate section even if it has a unique twist (green jello, ice cream), allow signs into the stadium, student section leadership! The students are the best cheerleaders, they can get a crowd into it if they only had a gameplan each week

The best CFB atmospheres are in stadiums with the best student sections. You think the game day experience at RES got better without students? Think again. BYU needs a similar evolution at LES.

No rip intended, but I can't figure the connection you are making with ESPN and all the gimmick sponsorships that BYU sells to local companies.



I enjoy the games just fine. But it is far more than a handful. It is non-stop on the PA. It takes away from the game to be constantly bombarded with sponsorships.

I agree. I like the lead up to the team coming out. I even like the video they play to get the crowd pumped. Although, the video from last season was not near as good as previous seasons.



My only complaint, like what I put in another post,is that I would appreciate if they gave the fans that 5 minutes. No need to have jumbo tron adds competing with the fans while waiting for the team to come out. Once the band takes the field until the team is out and on the side-line, no adds.

Can you imagine a stadium with fewer lame adverts, more actual CFB scores on the scoreboard? Modern fans love CFB, not just BYU, and like to hear/see scores. How about a stadium with a digital, HD TV Screen to show highlights? Or to even show game action on when byutv broadcasts? When I went to the FSU game, they had an awesome HD board and showed the game that was on ESPNU on the board prior to kickoff. It was awesome. Could watch BYU warm-up while seeing another game on live. Loved it.



A tailgate only parking lot would be sweet as well, to not just 'allow' it, but to promote it. Get all the fans in 1 place and it created this cool thing called atmosphere. As it is now, so spread out, creates nothing really. And the pre-game stuff is lame.

The ads will always be there, just like the billboards along I-15, just a fact of life. Just hope one or two makes me chuckle

The ads don't bother me, whats the difference between the Les Schwabb opening kickoff and the opening kickoff? It doesn't affect me in any way and it just make $15,000 for BYU football. That's a win in my book.



Besides, if a company is willing to give money to BYU football, then you better believe I'm more inclined to give them my business.

There are many thinks I like about the game day experience. Many I don't. There were no Cosmo movies last season thank goodness so hopefully that is a permanent decision. Things I would change:

1- I know it is tradition but the marching band pre-game spelling cougars is lame.

2- The B...Y...U...Cougars chant around the stadium bugs me for a few reasons- it is sooo slow, and the choice of stands that shout drives me crazy (aka, Utah game, why do we give the north endzone bleachers the U, then the grey hair section the cougars so the visiting team can yell "Sucks" instead.



I think they are going to be making strides to change things starting with the student section change. All I know is if we keep winning and get some good teams in the stadium, the noise will take care of itself.

My list of improvements:

1. Remove advertisements that block the fans' view of the field. I don't care that Allstate gives BYU $100 per field goal. If I can't see through their sign it shouldn't be up. Same thing for the credit union sign on the south end zone net.

2. Now that we are not in the MWC and don't have their stupid replay rule of only showing a play once, show multiple angles and shots of plays that are being replayed even if it is controversial. (Just only show replays that are going to go against us once and maybe cut them off just before it shows us fumbling...)

3. Make the student section general admission so that the students pack their section before the game starts.

4. Instruct the event staff at the gates to actually pretend that they are searching your bags for weapons to keep all of us safe, instead of making sure you don't have twinkees.

5. The store under the west bleachers needs to be about five times bigger with way more cashiers. I'm amazed at how many people cram their way into that tiny space trying to buy a shirt before the game starts.

6. Move the band...to the Marriot Center.

7. Less marching band during half time, more contests having fans trying to make 50 yard field goals for $100,000 etc. They used to have a contest with a fan throwing footballs through signs that got progressively further, that one was entertaining.

8. Add a scoreboard that shows game stats at all times during the whole game. Washington's stadium has this and it was awesome.

9. Add a scoreboard that shows other game scores all the time. They do this at Energy Solutions Arena. Why not at LES?

10. Ban the band from even touching their instruments when a play is being reviewed so that they are not in the middle of playing Hey Baby for the 20th time while the referee is announcing his ruling on the replay.

11. Give out printed rosters for both teams free at the game. Just get someone to sponsor it. During campaign season there usually is some candidate doing this and it is nice to have.

I like the band. Keep em. They are definitely a part of the whole "college football game day experience". What music is playing during all of the ESPN college game day previews? college football marching bands of course, and it's not because ESPN likes marching bands, it's because ESPN knows that music instantly makes a viewer think COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!!



Your #2 item. I hate replays at the game, mostly because the fans are going to boo everything and it just bothers me when it shows how little some fans know about the game. It's like some of these guys think that the zebra's are on BYU's team if the games at home, but that's probably true of any home crowd.

Love the idea of having highlights and showing more on the jumbo-tron. That means we need to actually invest in a Jumb0-tron and get rid of our black and white tube screen with surrounding ads that are bigger than the screen itself.



I was just at th3 U2 concert, i suggest a set up like that 360 screen.
