Best Ever--Safeties Edition

We're doing this each week to get us through the Spring/Summer doldrums. Monday I'll set the position and let you all submit names for consideration. After a couple of days, I'll take your nominations and create a poll thread to open up the voting as well as a more pointed debate, with a CougarCorner winner being crowned each Sunday evening.



This week = the Safeties--who do you think is in the conversation for best ever? Only TWO can make the all-time team!

Aaron Francisco

Derwin Gray

Got to nominate Scott Peterson.



Made an interception late in the 1988 Freedom Bowl to get BYU the ball back in Colorado territory and set up the game winning field goal.



3 years academic all-WAC.



He was an incredible athlete, also threw the javelin for BYU track and still has one of the longest javelin throws in BYU history.



Maybe some of you can fill in, I didn't see him play much (he played mostly before my time).

Kyle morrell anyone? His over the top dive against Hawaii made him somewhat legendary. An overall very good safety. I'd have to probably say Francisco and derwin gray.

I think that grab in and of itself should give him a nomination. He was WAC defensive player of the year in '84 as well.

Kyle Morrell would be #3 for me at this point. Played a few years for the Vikings. I am acquainted with Kyle and used to play a lot of golf with he, his dad and his brother Mac. Nice family, even though the rest were big Ute fans. Kyle works in NSL now.

The 96 team had 3 good safeties ellison, walker and sampson. I think walker had 6 picks that year, he could cover more ground than a lot of safeties. Sampson and ellison would both knock your head off. Incredible as a unit but not good enough to make the list as individuals
