Young guys getting bigger.

I was at lunch today enjoying a delicious cheesesteak sandwich, when my lunch got even better when I looked over and saw a couple of Cougars (football players, not older women). The two that I recognized were Heaps, and Apo. I noticed that these two boys (men now) were looking very big. There was another player with them. I don't know who he was but he was also a well built kid. So my question is, am I the only one that thinks these younger guys are getting extremely big? I know they are in the prime of their life to develop, but these kids looked thick. I've always been one who thought our athletes physiques weren't equal to that of our opponents, however in recent years that seems to be changing. So, what has changed in our program to cause this physical change?

Jay Omer does a great job getting kids bigger and stronger. The debate around him has been is it to the detriment of their speed and agility at times. Many on this board say yes, including a couple of former BYU athletes. But for sheer strength, he gets it done.

I've heard of guys being "Omered" or "Omerized" a la McKay Jacobsen. But even still they look different. I guess I'm wondering with Independence and more money now flowing into the program, are they able to put these kids on more strict diets and now can the program afford to feed them to help them stay on the diets? The "big" schools feed their athletes three meals a day that are generally pretty tailored to their needs.

When Omer took over there was a huge difference in the players. I remember Luke Staley's first year under Omer, he became a beast.

All true, especially the parts about Omer doing a great job getting kids bigger and stronger to the detriment of their speed and agility at times...and the parts about former BYU athletes...and sheer strength, he gets it done. ;-)

Good catch. I guess that's what happens when you post a message while cruisin on the freeway.

Seriously, though, our guys are big. We do a good job of bulking them up. Getting them faster...not so much.
