Poll - Most National Exposure created by a BYU Coach

OK - for this poll the measure is based on national recognition of BYU by non BYU fans associated with a former BYU player or coach who ended up coaching at BYU or elsewhere who acheived best (or nearly best) in the nation status at what they do for at least one season. So if you ask your average Duck or Gator to name in 3 seconds or less the coach they most associate with BYU - who are they going to name. Now they might remember a connection for good or for bad i.e. maybe Jimmer maybe Davies if the question was about a 2010/11 basketball player.



Lavell won a NC. Chow was the OC for several NCs and Heisman winners. Sarkisian was an OC for Heisman winners and a NC. Reid and Holmgren had big years as NFL head coaches. Even Crowton has seen the NC game lights as an OC. Oh - yeah - and Kyle coached teams that did everything possible to win a NC but were never given the chance to play for it - twice.

This had better be unanimous.

I think the only person who might be more associated with Brigham Young University might be Brigham Young himself. You could probably hold a referendum among BYU fans to rename the school Lavell Edwards University and we might become LEU.

Lavell not only transformed BYU football, he transformed college football and had an influence on professional football (without ever coaching there). There is no contest.

Amazing - everyone agrees on something. I actually think it is a two horse race. Remember - this is supposed to be from the perspective of a non-BYU fan. Back in the Day - it would Be LaVell Edwards as unanimous as this poll even for "outsidrs". But, then, he quietly retired. He never got any national TV commercial gigs or NFL jobs, or broadcaster jobs to keep him in the limelight. Having the Stadium Named after him does keep his memory alive.



Chow got some splash at NC State - just a smidge but back east that is all you ever get if from BYU. Then he got a ton of exposure at USC and everyone remembers he is from BYU. Some today might remember him more as asociated with USC - but most remember the BYU tie-in. Then he got a lot of talk going into UCLA - but lack of success has started his national recognition to fade quickly. The Ute signing got only local splash for the most part and until the Utes do something - not entirely likely - his national exposure may fade into the susnet. But over the past decade, I have heard many non-BYU fans bring up Chow and lately don't hear many talking about Edwards.



So out of curiosity - some of you that do not live in the Rockies should try asking this quesiton to strangers that ar enot BYU fans. Their response may surprise you. But it may still be Lavell edwards - maybe just not unanimous. He got my vote.



Or for fun - which former Notre Dame Coach is synonymouse with ND football? Don't answer if you are a ND fan. I came up with Knute Rockne and hope I remembered correctly and could not quickly think of any others that are synonymous with ND football. i.e. people forget. I asked myself the ND player questoin and came up with Joe MOntana and hoped I remembered corectly becasue I didn't follow him in college and think of him as a 49er. I could not think of anyone else right off the top of my head. How quickly we forget when it is not our team. IN other words, it would not surprise me if I forgot someone pretty obvious at ND. Now ask me thte same question about Texas and I draw a blank. Washington State - no clue. UCLA - Terry Donahue????



I guess these are just very short lists due to the greatness one needs to achieve to be remembered by the entire country.



Utah - Urban Meyer - easy and he was only there about 2 years - because Ray Nagel outside of the fan base is forgotten and KWHit's fame has not taken off yet and netiehr did anything anywhere else.

It is a stretch and certanly not his primary association - ie Florida. But it is kind of like some people who associate Steve Young with the 49ers but remember he came out of BYU along the way.



But in the case of the Utes - who else have they got - very short list.

I totally agree - but they remember that he came out of BYU along the way. But USC greatly elevated his exposure. Same for Sarki. He is more asociated by most of the country with USC than BYU - but some remember the tie to BYU secondarily.

Sorry bib but it is a MAJOR stretch, even for you as a huge Chow fan, to even list him in the same breath as Lavell when it comes to BYU.

No lay fan outside of the state of Utah knew who Norm Chow was until his run at USC. Any lay fan who has heard of Lavell Edwards thinks BYU and BYU only.



If you really bought your own argument, I would expect Norm Chow to have at least one vote.....

My point exactly. Outside of the BYU bubble, especially east of Denver, most fans would not remember Chow or Lavell and especially younger fans except Chow went to USC and got national visibility as a result od success at USC and everyone was buzzing about his success at USC but kept mentioning that he came from BYU. LaVell quietly retired. Luckily they named the stadium after him and that has been mentioned on the MTN and Versus and ESPN 6 a few times on televised games and his name shows up on top 10 winningest coaches lists when that gets a few seconds on TV and that is why I voted for Lavell Edwards. But if any of you are in So. Cal or back east and ask a typical BCS fan this question IMHO you will hear Norm Chow as a close second when you tally the responses. Among BYU fans - I would expect Lavell to get 100%. BYU fans will never forget Lavell Edwards name and what he did for BYU and the game of football. But keep in mind- Lavell probably thought more highly of Norm Chow than I do. Lavell Edwards got my vote, but I am going to test some non-BYU fans when I get to Florida next week.

PS. Totally agree that any lay fan that has heard of Lavell Edwards will think of BYU and BYU and BYU only. My point is that he has been retired quietly for over a decade and non BYU fans in many cases have not heard of him.

Lavell no one else comes close.Besides I met Him several times and he was extremely nice to me.
