Ken Schmidt was a nice guy, and very interesting to listen to, but for my money, Bronco is the man. As supporting evidence, look at his bio on the official BYU football site. Everywhere he went, the defenses got better.

That's what I'm talking about. There were times I was worried I'd have to bail my mother out of jail for killing Ken Schmidt. Didn't he have the reigns in '91 for that ridiculous 52-52 game against SDSU? I mean, sure, it made Ty Detmer look that much better, being able to put up 35 points in a little over a quarter to tie the game, but you can't give up 50+ points. You just can't. And then there was that stupid, crazy Utah State game... My memory may be selective, but I don't remember* a good BYU defense (outside of '96) until Bronco came along.

Bronco also had the reins against Tulsa, which might be one of the worst defensive outings in the last 20 years, not to mention some poor showings against TCU and BSU as well as giving up 50+ in getting pummelled by CSU at home back when he was DC under Crowton.



I gave my vote to Schmidt for the 1996 defense.....the best ever at BYU.

83 and 84 were solid iirc
