2012 Recruiting thoughts

So I've started checking scout daily and I check the rivals and ESPN recruiting blogs regularly and I have to say I've been impressed with the players being recruited this year. I am particularly impressed by the guys recruited and offered down in Texas and I think Dupaix has been excellent locating talent in the backfield. If you look at the RBs they have offered, Kelvin York (just verballed to USC), Brandon Marshall and Russell Hansbrough I don't think we've ever seen athletes like these at BYU. Hopefully Dupaix can get one of those guys to come as well as some of the top tier offensive linemen.



I have to say I am impressed with who BYU is pursuing. Even if just one or two of these guys come I'd say Dupaix and Doman were great hires. They definitely appear to be doing the legwork off the field.

The jury is still out on how well our new staff will recruit. I like what I see so far. Hopefully the pond is full of really nice fat rainbow, brown, cutthroat, brook, steelhead, and lake trout and we catch our share. You have to set the hook, though or they slip away at the last minute.

The jury is not out on who we recruit. We have a 6 year history to go on now, with the last 3 years being the best 3 year recruiting stretch BYU has ever had. Period. With missions and redshirts, it will be a few years before we see it, but starting in 2011, this will really be the first full year of all Bronco recruits, and of players Bronco went for for ability, and not just character to avoid off the field issues. We still need to add skill guys at the right spots, but we now have depth and ability not seen at BYU in decades, if ever.

Has any signed recruit admitted the whole Indy situation sold them? It sold me the day it was announced.

The jury is still out. Remember - the new guys were supposed to take us to a new level. The jury is still out on that- but I have seen some good early signs. I heard the same mantra when Crowton came on board. Now as then - I am like the guys from Missouri - The Show Me State. Hope they do.

I totally agree about the jury being out, what I'm saying is if we land one of these running backs from Texas or California Dupaix seems to be chasing, he'd be worth the hire just for that.

As far as I'm concerned, Doman has already earned his hire in terms of recruiting QBs and WR (this year and previous).

This year's class is definitely heavy on defensive players, and I can't help but believe the BYU defense is going to improve substantially over the next 3-4 years.



BYU has always been able to recruit great QBs, great TEs, OL, some pretty good receivers, etc; but I think our next big step needs to be at the running back position. Unga was a gem, and the current crop are pretty good, but not great. IF BYU can land a couple of top tier running backs with great speed, hands, etc (you know, superman), then the offense will truly be something to be feared.
