PAC-12 TV Deal

Looks as if the PAC-12 just one upped everyone out there with their new deal. Timing was a factor, but it was still better than what the SEC got, which is amazing. Larger markets can do that, I suppose. But it also means that Utah will be pulling in a minimum of about $19M starting in 2014. This, once again, shows why BYU had to go Indy. College sports is turning into a $$$ race, and you need it to compete. BYU will lag behind Utah in $$$, unless donors bridge that gap. However, all the $$$ in the world does not guarantee success. SO the pressure is on BYU to go win, and to win now. More than ever locally.

You can have all the money in the world and still lose games. Look at all the toilet scrubbers in these BCS conferences.

BYU now gets more money than ever, so we'll be even better than ever IF we use it correctly.

Plus, we did ALL this on our own. Utah needs the help from a conference to get theirs AND they signed the deal with the Devil anyways. They won't get 100% of their money for a few years. They're head isn't even above water in their basketball program. So they're desperate, and we all know we don't act properly when we're desperate.

I read an article in a newspaper a couple months ago about Utah althetic's financial situation. It said ticket prices were going increase significantly because Utah needs to start investing heavily in its facilities to compete with its new conference foes, and they won't be getting jack squat from the conference at first (obviously I'm paraphrasing :) ).

Congrats on your conference invite :utard: fans! Enjoy your inflated tickets prices

Yoot fans shouldn't have a problem. Because we all know that rain or shine, winning or losing... Yoot fans show up to support their team!

This hurts BYU from an exposure standpoint. BYU wasn't a very high priority for ESPN before this deal. Now, BYU is even less of a priority.

Not necassarily. ESPN invested as much money as they'll get out of it. In both teams.

BYU only has BYU to bring to the table: fans, exposure, etc...

Utah has very little to bring to the table BUT they do have the other 11 PAC teams that come with it. 11 times the fans, exposure, ticket sales, etc...

Let's face it... Utah belonging in a big conference will get the benefits of being part of such. If Utah went Indy like we did. They'll be bankrupt the second they announce it. BYU is unique in everything. We got our deal, which all of us was ecstatic about. No need to feel we got shorten cause Utah belongs with tree huggers.

BYU just has to win and the rest takes care of itself. ESPN does an outstanding job of promoting their partners. We are an ESPN partner, as is the PAC-12 now. However, we are basically an exclusive partner, while the PAC-12 is not. IF we win, they will talk us up. If we lose, they will have no incentive to.

This is great news for the pukes. It is what their program needed. They are lucky they are not affiliated with the Mormon church :P

That said it doesn't hurt byu any. some might say it will take away from the number of games byu would be on espn which may have some truth to it, but realistically all byu needs to do is win (and get a better deal with the bcs.) and they will be fine.

if we pull off a 3-0 record will will jump up in the polls and stay there throughout the season while Utah will drop out and probably not make it back in.

I hope Texas gets their act together.

My thoughts exactly! Now the whole country will see them getting beat down every week on national television.

I would hate for the good people of this nation to miss out on such a gratifying experience.

I've been around a few years, and I've followed football since I was about ten. But I fail to see the need for all this money. Yes, facilities, stadiums, etc; but BYU has as good a facilities as anybody, so what does all this "money" do for your "program?" Just exactly how does having a boat load of money translate into winning?

BYU gets the players they get, I don't see them getting better players just because they have more money. I don't see BYU recruiting better just because they have more money. I don't see players wanting to come to BYU because BYU has more money. BYU sells out LES for every home game, this is not going to change because we have more money. BYU football is already a big money maker, and basketball makes some too.

So somebody please explain why more and more money is so critical. Are we just talking about all the other "minor" sports that nobody cares about anyway? Just exactly how does having a lot more money make BYU a better place to play, how does it make BYU a better football team, how does it improve BYU's recruiting, how does it deliver a national championship? Or are we just talking vanity, and bragging rights, or the ability to take the BYU marching band to all the away games?

I think BYU Needs more $$$ to keep up from a perception perspective mainly, but also to use to upgrade their facilities. We do have solid facilities, but they are dated now and in need of some work. LES is 30 and really needs a face lift. Need to go in and get the rust out, steam clean it, and repaint the place, add new benches with backs, a new HD scoreboard, and look the part of a big time program. The MC also needs a similar update, and to put new blue seating in.

Also, more money equals better facilities, more to spend on football and hoops technology, it helps to show recruits that we are keeping up and modernizing what we have, including locker rooms, work out facilities, and not living in the 80's. Basically, other schools are putting newer and nicer stuff in(see Oregon), as Utah will be, so we need to keep up in that respect. Obviously, with our core facilities in place already, it will take us less $$$ to keep up than Utah will need to even get to respectable, but we still need to if we want to continue to get the top local kids, and talent out of state. Even Notre Dame upgrades their stuff.

More money means you can pay your football coach $5 million/year, instead of $600k

People need to stop worrying about the Utes getting a pay day. Are you all the sudden worried about Washington State? They got a pay raise. How about CAL? UCLA? We get lots of recruits from those areas as well. Money won't make these programs into something they aren't. The Utes got whatever lift they were going to get by joining the PAC, not by getting a bigger pay check. At the end of the day, the Utes have a 45,000 seat stadium. If they don't pull out 10 wins (highly unlikely) like their bandwagon fans have become accustomed to, Ute tickets will be back on sell at Costco, just like they were in 2003.

Sometimes when I read these things, it seems like people think that BYU's only competition is Utah. What Utah does really has no effect on BYU anymore. Utah will do their thing and BYU will do their thing. Why do we have to compare everything either school does to the other? Are both fan bases that insecure?

I don't fret about what the yewts do, but you can't say that what they do has no effect on BYU anymore. We compete with the yewts 364 days a year for recruits and 1 day a year on the field. I'm just glad we usually win on both fronts.

I got money where is my hot chick? Urroner probably has them all (locked in the basement of NASA).

anyways more money means that you can take more recruiting trips and spend more money on them when they visit and taking care of our current players at the dinner table. It also will help the other sports like volleyball, soccer and softball.

Looking at the details of the new TV deal, will be interesting to see what happens when few Utah games get shown on ESPN and Fox, with most on PAC-12 Network. You can guarantee that USC will get every game shown on ESPN and Fox, with Oregon next the first few years. Then the larger market teams. So unless Utah really looks awesome coming into a season, they might get 4-5 games a year on the big networks with the rest on PAC-12 for football. Still, it will have better penetration that the MTN, but not like ESPN.

I do expect that BYU-Utah game will get picked up by one of those every other year, though.

So the PAC 12 deal is for football, basketball, and a package of olympic sports.

We have our independent deal for fb, WCC ESPN deal for basketball, and ? for Olympic. Wonder what our overall TV compensation is next year...
