2011 NFL Draft

I just took a quick look to see how "the old" MWC Conference teams did in the 2011 NFL Draft. I didn't write down the names & positions & teams they went to. Just how many from each school were in the draft & drafted - as of right now.

Interesting numbers, but I don't care. I'm not an NFL guy, if BYU goes undefeated and plays great football, and nobody gets drafted, so what? Life is much bigger than a game, and certainly bigger than the NFL.

we certainly had a weak senior class this year. But how does Utah state and wyoming both send more guys than we do? Really? really?

I agree - partly. I don't care about NFL Teams. I do care about BYU Football Teams winning & attracting the players that can help BYU win.



Look at Jake Heaps. He help the Cougs win. Does he plan on entering the NFL? Certainly. Harvey Unga, Austin Collie, and Matt Reynolds? Look at the guys that help us win - they all have NFL aspirations. (Max Hall, Steve Young, Bryan Kehl, etc.)



Top notch High School football players - have NFL desires. They look @ college programs & ask themselves will this school help me get into the NFL. If you are a Troy Hinds (14 offers right now), Jake Heaps, etc. - and it comes down to Oklahoma, Notre Dame, USC or BYU - I guarantee the "NFL connection" & how many players are going into the NFL is a consideration. It does matter for BYU's recruiting & winning.

Bottom line - we lacked talent with experience last year and it showed all year long. TCU was ommitted in the OP list. They had 5 draft picks. Is it any wonder TCU, FSU, and Nevada kicked our cans. They had NFL talent with experience. BYU did have Reynolds who could have been drafted had he gone early. He will be a first rounder in 2012 draft.



We will put players in the NFL in 2012, 2013, and 2014 drafts. The future looks bright. But it will be rare that we have SEC typical numbers on NFL draft picks. BYU will need to continue to find ways to do more with less - by hard work, discipline, and team concept.

BYU had more than 2 guys who wanted to get drafted, that is ceratain. Don't forget Logan, Bradley and Speredon, who all worked out for scouts. I could make a comment about overall lack of elite talent, but would rather point out that BYU under Bronco, has done more with less than rival schools have. And now that we have more young talent, I suspect we will do even more with MORE.

Overall this draft runs parallel to the lockout...full of problems.



The ONLY nfl I watch is to look for Y guys succeeding and their highlights. The Indy stage has major implications, and one of them is that our players are going to be seen more and get more chances to show their stuff, that'll help with drafts. But #1-win consistently from beginning to end. '10 shut some doors. I'm not surprised didn't see any drafts as cool as those players are. They will still get signed when they show their stuff. I don't think Vic will even make 1st cuts though.

I thought I'd break this down a little further - and look at the BCS Top 25 (end of season) and see how they did in the 2011 NFL draft.

I thought that Harvey Unga counted as being drafted in the 4th round

I believe Harvey Unga would be considered taken in last years "2010 Supplemental Draft." Not this years "2011 NFL Draft." But - I have been wrong before.

I don't buy that Bronco has been doing more with less talent. BYU has ranked either 1st or 2nd in the recruiting rankings in conference since before he took over.

I agree, but didn't the Bears give up a 4th round pick in this years draft to get him last spring?

Yes, this is true, but it takes 6 years at BYU due to missions to see that talent on the field, last year was bronco's 6th year. We also kicked out an entire class of DB's from the school in 2004 and when Bronco took over in 2005 a bunch of other players left the program. It takes a long time to recover that talent via recruiting. the 2005 recruiting class was problematic because Bronco only had a couple of weeks to recruit after taking over so you can throw that class out mostly. Plus there were a bunch of recruits in the early 00's that never even made it to school that contributed to the high recruiting rankings that BYU got at the time. BYU has been down on talent for the latter part of this decade, we are finally seeing that talent level increase. BYU's defense has been patched together with walk on's for most of the time Bronco has been the head coach. That wasn't his choice believe me. (even though he says in the media that he loves walk on's).
