Agreed. The comparison was vs. Tim Tebow. From what I heard - they think Locker is a better athlete than Tebow. Time will tell.

Tennessee must have seen just one game in his 4 YEAR CAREER.

The Vikings are idiots too for drafting Ponder at #12. They probably could have gotten him in the second round. Plus I think Dalton is a better QB than Ponder, but neither is a #12 pick.



It still amazes me guys like Newton, Gabbert, and Ponder are top 12 picks and Aaron Rodgers is a #24 pick.

This is all just a ploy to get people to stay interested in Jake Locker so the media can talk about the celebration penalty against BYU for another few months. I envision a book deal coming soon, with a foreword by Mark Mays.

So sad, the guy can't hit the side of a barn and doesn't win.

I like Ponder at #12. I think he can be a winner. Smart, mobile, good enough arm, and wins when healthy. I had him the top QB in the draft personally. Not the best specimen, but the best signal caller.

The analysts that I am hearing are breaking it down this way:



Can Newton: A work in progress - they like his size (6' 5", 250 lbs.), athletic ability. He has a long way to go. Analysts think this was a very risky draft & would not have made this choice. He only threw 200 Div. 1 passes. Three years down this road it will probably be a failed experiment - only average success - not living up to a #1 draft spot. Oh well, it's happened before with QB's. Time will tell. I wish him well.



Jake Locker: Shocker of the 1st Round Draft. Apparently, the Titan Off. Coord. was pounding the table for Jake Locker. They know they need to work on his accuracy & his decision making. But, they like his toughness, athletic ability & competitive attitude. They think Jake will be a winner. I would love to know why the Titan Off Coord was so hooked on Locker. I think it's a "man crush!" Ha-ha-ha!!!



Blaine Gabbert: Excellent situation with the Jaguars. He has a QB in front of him & time to develop. Pundits think - 5 years down the road, Gabbert will be the best QB out of this group.

I don't like my quarterbacks who are extremely inaccurate. He was a career .539 completion percentage. He was at .554 as a senior. He had 11 career games where is completion percentage was below .450 and just two above .700. Jake Heaps already has two .700 or better games in his career.



I'm sorry, but I'm not buying the Locker hype. The only reason he IS being drafted is because he's a specimen. He looks like he should better than he is. He's just not a good QB.

I like the Christian Ponder pick.. sure he may have slipped to the second round but the Vikings were drafting a huge need that they couldn't risk waiting on. Plus I think Ponder was the best QB taken in the first round. Locker going in the top 10 is an absolute joke.

locker is a surefire bust. he will never be a good decision maker.



newton could be good but my guess is he will be a bust given he will create negative drama on whatever team he is with. the guy is an idiot.



ponder will probably be good.

The biggest concern with Locker and Newton is a little thing called 'accuracy.'



Name me one pro-bowl qb whose biggest question coming into the league was accuracy. I can only think of Vick, and neither Newton or Locker approach the other talents Vick offered.

I don't dislike Ponder--I just think that Minnesota could have gotten better value by trading down to the 20s and getting an extra pick or two. Unless they knew someone else had him rated in the teens...

I think the draft shows--once again--the premium that the league puts on QB's, and the diminished role of the RB in the NFL game. Teams will take a risk with a QB, but RBs slip unless they are insanely good. RBs used to rule the draft, and now WRs are given more weight. Sign of the times in the NFL for sure.



As to Newton, I think he is a cross between Vince Young and Dante Culpepper. I know that the kid has off the field issues, and can be dumb off the field, but on the field he wins. And he wins a lot. I do not have questions about his ability to lead an NFL team because he is a winning QB. I do have questions about whether he gets himself into trouble or does something to help him lose cred off the field, like Vince Young did. Locker rooms are a weird animal, and if he helps Carolna win, the rest is distraction, but forgotten. See Big Ben for details. Do not see him as a bust. Just not sure he becomes that elite guy. Might have a McNabb type career, which would be pretty solid.



As to Ponder, I have liked him for 2+ years. HE makes good decisions, is mobile enough, big enough and strong enough arm. plus, is smart. Was working on his MBA last year at FSU, so he has what it takes to make it at the next level. He can be a Hasselbeck type of guy. With the right team, he wins. And at Minnesota, he has crazy good skill players around him, which helps. Great situation for him to succeed. Best of any 1st Round QB.

I'm surprised there weren't more comparisons made between Jamarcus Russell and Cam Newton.



Russell got the #1 pick because he was just so freaking big and athletic that he dominated on the college level and it covered up his flaws, chiefly, his work ethic, or lack thereof (among many other things).



Is it the same story for Newton? I don't know, but I just thought more people would've brought up the discussion.

That's the thing about Newton. He's a hard worker. He's not lazy like Russell.



Someone earlier in the thread mentioned how they like their QBs to be winners. I completely agree. For every Elway (never won enough to play in a single bowl game at Stanford) there are at least one or two Cutler's or Jeff George's. People who have all the skills, but don't really increase your team's ability to win games. (I know Cutler had a winning year last year, but I also see them probably winning at least 2 more games with almost any descent starting QB last year.) The lack of winning and lack of accuracy are the reasons that I wouldn't touch Locker.

People say Newton has issues off the field. I must be missing something that people seem to be judging him for. His dad made money off Cam. That's not Cam's make or break call. That's between Auburn and his dad.



Granted I haven't followed Cam like others have, so I'm not seeing it, if there is something else.



On the bright side... Seems like Cam's dad would be a great manger/agent for him :lol:

He supposedly left Florida for stealing a laptop computer and cheating in some classes.

It's going to be weird seeing Clawson, Newton and Luck on the same Carolina roster next year.

Locker can't throw, he'll be out of the NFL when his contract expires.
