2011 Armed Forces Bowl deal in place

Friday, December 30th, which beats the NM and LV Bowl dates. BYU now also has 3 games in Texas in 2011. Let's hope they all draw big BYU contingents and show the Big 12 schools we show up...

Still, not an exciting bowl game to be affiliated with.

Just means we have a safety net in place for 2011, 2012 and 2013. Worse places to go than Dallas, San Diego and San Francisco. Let's hope they can lock in some other decent destinations for 2014 and beyond.

It's not that exiting of a bowl, but I like the fact that it is played in late December rather than a week or two before Christmas.

I think it's awesome. I feel as though every team in the world should want to schedule BYU and every bowl in the universe should fight for our involvement but I'm thinking that might not actually be the case. As such, kudos to Holmoe for putting together a competitive 2011 schedule with very litle notice (even despite the MWC's attempt to block the whole thing) and setting up three bowl affiliations which, if we're honest with ourselves, are not much worse than the bowls we've been to in the last few years.

Holy cow, im in class so just found this out!! Happy to find out cause that means I see 3 games in person!!! I need to buy a white jersey now!!

Rematch with UCF??? this will be tough if we play SMU, Houston, and UCF. wasnlt this the mwc bowl? Guess not anymore!! Where will AF play?

I would assume we get SMU or maybe UCF or So. Miss. Doubt they do a rematch with UCF, but who knows.

You guys are jumping to conclusions. We will never make that game since we will be in one of the BCS bowl games. 8)

Kind of funny how things come full circle. We leave the MWC and end up picking up their current or former lower tiered bowls. Always knew bowls were perhaps the biggest downside to independence, but maybe that will change with the next contractual cycle.

Ya they may be lower, but BYU gets ALL the money.

If BYU starts the season 3-0, they will never get to this bowl, they'll be in a BCS bowl...and yes, keep all the money from that bowl too.

OSU: Thanks for the 2009 and 2011 beat downs, some fans missed the 09 one so thanks for beating us down in Corv.



UCF: FS must have had extra oxygen, and we didn't get class credit for pointing out any peaks.



TCU: Coach Patty the Fatty slammed his hat on the ground several times, we haven't seen him do that since 2006.



Hawaii: 2001 was 2001, 2011 is time for the Dominator to Heap it back on the island.

The best news about this announcement is that we will be able to watch a game that is after Christmas and close to new years day.



I'll take it over playing in on Dec 18th. No bowl before Christmas gets any respect from the College Football world.

Yep, I sure hope we can start playing in well respected, post-Christmas bowls like:

Little Caesars Bowl - 26 DEC

AdvoCare V1000 Independence Bowl - 27 DEC

Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl - 30 DEC

GoDaddy.com Bowl - 6 JAN

BBVA Compass Bowl - 8 JAN



The date of the bowl isn't what makes the bowl great - it's the matchup and to some extent the location.

IMO this is the worst deal so far from Holmoe for two main reasons.



1) At worst BYU would have ended up in the same tier of bowl game without the agreement and likely would have ended up in a much better Big12 affiliated game. Given the structure and schedule of the Big12 I would have expected the Texas or Pinstripe bowls. So instead of playing a Big East team in New York or a Big10 team in Houston, we'll play a Conf USA team in Dallas.



2) The game is sponsored by Bell. I imagine there is a good chance BYU may take some heat in some circles by participating in a game sponsored by the folks at Bell. Especially considering it will be the middle of primaries and 56% of Republicans think we should end the war in Afghanistan and a bunch of people the world over agree the armed forces of this country exist only to subsidize companies like Bell. But hey, exposure is exposure.
