BYU vs. The South

When is the last time BYU beat a team from the Southern US region?

Tulane of 09....then nothing since Georgia Tech 03 right? Tulane 01. Came close to Bama remember that one?



You could count TCU I suppose of 06, but then throw UTEP in too, I don't really count Texas as "the south" an argument I guess I lost to a Tech PhD student, but Florida, Georgia, Mississippie, etc. Those states.



In the last 3 years and 2011 BYU will have played 4 teams from the "deep" south: UCF, FSU, Miss, Tulane.



I know BYUs goal or Bronco's goal is to cover regions of the US. Will an increased amount of play in the south lead to more wins vs these schools? Will this help with recruiting? I'm excited to find out, and it will be nice to see BYUs weakness against teams like FSU become smaller as we improve coaching and play. UCF is going to be FSU, that's how I'd like BYU to prepare for them, and then there is no shock or surprise by their speed/talent. We have been out performed time and time again in the last ten years or so (GT, FS, tulane 00 any others?) and with our region coverage, coaching improvements, and talent I think this can be a change into the future that sees drastic improvement in performing well against teams known for speed...and dui's (Not a Fisher Deberry reference or slur).

So what you are arguing really is BYU vs. the Southeast. About right?

I was gonna say something about Oklahoma, but even Texas apparently isn't in the South so scratch that... my geography must be messed up or something.

I don't really care about BYU's record versus the Southeast region as much as versus the Southeastern Conference. The Big XII isn't really the South and the ACC is still a basketball conference. Plus, BYU has a decent record against Big XII schools and has a few wins against ACC schools.



But what about the SEC? I can only think of four games and one win against SEC teams--



0-1 Alabama

0-1 Georgia

1-1 Miss State



To put that into perspective, Wyoming has more wins over SEC teams in the past 10 years than BYU has in its history...

But then...who would want to play for Wyoming?

Eh, I don't consider San Diego a part of the south.



When I think of "the south" I think of regions destroyed during the Civil War. These areas carry a sense of wounded pride. Although TX was part of the Confederacy, they were mostly spectators during the war. And the population remained relatively small until after the war's conclusion.
