All Walk-on Team

Well since we are looking at the best all-time players at certain positions how about an all walkon team. I nominate D Pitta , B Criddle and A Rich.

Good idea! I really like this one. Lets see some of the great walkons we've had at BYU.

Andrew Rich and Ben Criddle were both walk ons and turned out to be just fine.

Wasn't Nate Meikle a walk-on? If so, put him on the list!

For some reason, the feel good walk on story never materializes at QB.

That's because we recruit such awesome talent there. How about Kavenga at LB, even though he has not played a game yet.

Ryan Hancock? I know he was a scholarship baseball player, but I don't think he was a football scholarship player.

He might count. Gifford Nielsen maybe as well.



As the story goes, he was a Provo HS hero and would have jumped at the chance to play basketball or football at BYU. Neither team wanted him, but politics got him a half scholarship with each team.



He played terrible in his first varsity action in 1975. The next game, things were so dire Edwards gave him a second chance, but Edwards is quoted as saying Gifford never did anything to give the coaching staff any confidence that he could succeed.

Steve Lindsley--he was the first walk-on BYU quarterback, and the first RM quarterback at BYU, not to mention the first to get his first start as a senior:

He had a decent year, so he might be the best we get for the all-walk-on team.

A former walk-on, Bellini led BYU with 63 receptions for 1,008 yards, including 14 touchdowns his senior season in 1985. He was also 10th nationally in receiving average of 5.7 catches per game. Had 138 receptions, 2,267 yards receiving and 23 touchdowns in his career.

I'm not a fan of walkons succeeding. It means your coaches are missing on too many players.

Remember most of these walk-ons are guys that are known as preferred walk-ons. Meaning that most had scholarships elsewhere but wanted to play for the y. So its not like most of these guys came out of nowhere. These are good players, who gave up other opportunities to play at the y. So we should commend our coaches for allowing so many walk-on players because a lot of schools don't

I can understand where Spiff is coming from but I disagree to an extent and this is why. You recruit the kids who are athletic, this means a program like BYU will wind up with kids who weren't athletic enough to get recruited, but have the heart and desire to play for BYU. Sometimes the heart and desire can make up for shortcomings in athleticism, and sometimes it cant.
