Ole Miss spring wrap up

It is the equivalent of what BYU fans are saying about the UCF game.



SEC teams are arrogant though. Theirs fans are worse. Often with good reason though (see NC titles games). Ole Miss is not one of those teams, however. Especially after their 2010 season. But I am hoping they act that way. Love a team with a chip on their shoulder that they do not deserve.

Noticed the article mentioned the strength of Ol' Miss will be the run game. . . Good luck with that one. Our defensive front is going to be a brick wall. The only weakness might be to a pass happy team ie. Hawaii. That's the game I'm most worried about.

Other sites I have visited make it sound like Ole Miss expects to win this because it's at home, they're from the SEC, and we are not. I would love to go into SEC country and remind them other places know how to play good football too.


ESPN sure didn't make it sound like they should win. The injury/personnel loss seemed to be pretty significant. And the strength of the offense was by far the running game while the greatest weakness on the defense was the pass defense. Anyone from Ole Miss guaranteeing a win in this one should check with a doctor. Their meds are too strong. :gross:

Valid concern. My thinking is that the Hawaii game will be deep enough into the season that we will have worked out the bugs in the D secondary.



No, I'm not going to guarantee a win here at Ole Miss. But I expect we'll win. I'm thinking if the team is as good as I'm reading, and in light of what we saw toward the end of last year, we have an excellent chance of winning at Texas too.



And how we win is important. No trash talking, no in your face stuff. Cordiality, manners, hold our head high, thank them for the game, and get out.

Quick thought on the Texas game. . . so if we win do we shoot ourselves in the foot for a future Big 12 invite? On the other hand a win at Texas would help further validate the indy route making it more likely to succeed. 8)

BYU football is not about the Jimmer. At all. BYU football actually plays defense, even if we are an aerial attack team. Jimmer coasted on D. BYU Football will not.

This doesn't mention anything positive about Ole Miss' Defense. I know they are an "SEC Defense" but it feels like we'll be able to move the ball on them both on the ground and in the air.

My friend, who is an Ole Miss Alum and avid fan, and with whom I will be attending the game, thinks the Y is going to roll the Rebs. They lost a starting QB - Massoli, and their starting LB among other players. The team was marginal last year and he believes that they haven't improved much. Real faith will be exercised as I will be sitting in rabid Reb fan area cheering for the Y. :P

I think the opposite it true. I good win at Texas puts us "more" in with the Big12. The win against OK made them one of our biggest supporters at inclusion into the big 12.

Um, we couldn't run the ball against our D. What makes you think we will against theirs? Even If we didn't have juice and some O-linemen. I heard we were "deep". I heard we were strong up front. I didn't see that at the spring game.

The article also mentioned that their leading QB this spring is fast and dangerous running. That does make me nervous. Running QBs have had their moments against us. I'm not worried about the RBs. Bronco usually finds a way to bottle up the RBs.

Because we won't be running against our defense in that game. Because we won't be running against a defense that knows all our plays. Because we still have five months before the game. There are many reasons.

This will be an ugly slugfest and no one should expect anything different. Anyone care to look up what our historical record against SEC teams is or for that matter what our record is playing any team east of the Mississippi. I did hurricane cleanup in Mississippi and I saw the 10,000 seat stadiums for their middle schools. Football is king. They grow them big and fast down there and those kids know hard nose run it down your throat football. You can also expect no love from the SEC officials, remember the phantom calls when we played Hershal Walker and Georgia. Anyone who thinks they will be Jimmered is dreaming.



I have faith we will win but it won't be pretty.

Everybody knows the "spring game" is not real, it's not real football, it's not even real BYU football, half the team doesn't participate, players are held out, it's all done for fun, so is not a real test.



Plus, fast, mobile QBs are not going to be an issue this year, can you say Van Noy? Kavienga? Pendleton?



And it is the lamest argument to go dig up our past record against SEC teams (or any other conference), that is as irrelevant information as you can find. It is the 2011 BYU team against the 2011 Ole Miss team; games from 10, 20, 30 years ago is completely meaningless.



BYU has rarely lined up and just run the ball down opponents throats, it is not BYU football. BYU passes first and keeps everybody honest by running enough, effectively, to keep the defense honest. If BYU only runs for 125 yards, passes for 450, and score 52 points--what does our "ordinary" running game matter? Texas Tech doesn't overwhelm anyone with their running game either, but you better come to play or they will embarrass you with the pass.

Glad to see a Tech reference. BYU has developing a culture of football that is inspiring. Can't wait to see it in action.

Here's a few reasons:

1) Our defense knows the plays and personnel pretty well.

2) Sitting out of spring game was our starting, all-american lineman and several other lineman recovering from offseason surgeries.

3) We run vanilla offenses in the spring

4) it was cold and RB's run slower when they're cold? :D

5) several drives were stopped due to whistle/don'ttouchme sacks that might have otherwise continued

6) low-scoring game

7) we're still implementing the Doman playbook. We've always said it wouldn't change too much from Anae, but I'm inclined to disagree.



All of those reasons are gone in the Fall except perhaps 6 (who knows) and 7.

What are you basing those comments on? Quezada sitting out the Spring game?



BYU's run D looked very good this spring, but our running offense looked very good at the same time. Drew Phillips had like 15 carries for 29 yards, true, but the 3 good players all showed very well.
