Weird things happen to kickers

So apparently Justin Sorenson was bitten by a Brown Recluse spider on his kicking leg, took a bunch of drugs, fell off a porch and broke his ankle and had to have re-constructive surgery, all on his mission. Just another day at the office for a kicker.

Just read this from the News Bites. What a funny article.



To think that he was in the MTC during football season. That blows. I know, because I was in the MTC during football season. I could hear the band play after each score, halftime etc.



Fortunately it was during the medium-latter part of the crowton years, so I wasn't missing much... ;)

I was in the LTM (old timer's MTC) and we went to several football games. This was back in '72. We had a blast. Of course, I could only talk and cheer in Spanish.

When Sorensen was recovering in the MTC he was a part of a branch full of recovering missionaries. That branch attended my ward every Sunday. Sorensen went to the same high school as my wife(then fiance) and so I had heard a lot about his kicking ability and what not.

When he first came to my ward I recognized him and with his name tag I was able to put 2 and 2 together.



So I noticed that he was walking around with a boot on his foot and this worried me because I was quite excited about the prospect of this kid who holds the Utah record for longest field goal playing for BYU. So I walked up and introduced myself and told him who I was marrying and all that. Then I asked him what happened to his foot. He kind of sheepishly smiled as he told me the story. You could tell that he was a little embarrassed by it but I couldn't help but laugh at him.



All and all he is a great guy, very approachable, and is true blue all the way.

Which ankle did he break? Kicking or non-kicking?

This can't right. I thought missions were when we send players to have exclusive gym memberships for two years so they can come back bigger, faster, stronger and more mature to help BYU gain an unparalleled competitive advantage.

Drew and others I believe have reported Sorenson to be significantly off his pre-mission kicking distance. I'm sure this is part of it.



Hopefully he can get it back.

Not often enough! Or maybe too often! (then he would've been gone a year earlier). It was a true test of faith to study language right in the middle of a Y game. Also, I could see my house in Lehi from the 3rd or 4th story windows.



Fortunately, I had a loving dad that told me he "didn't care if I went on a mission, but if you do go, I don't want to see you for 2 years - unless (you) come home in a box."



"So if you come home early, you better figure out something for yourself to do for a couple years."

I'm not gonna lie...some house next to the MTC had a big screen facing the MTC. I was at the MTC at the end of the 2001 season...pure pain. I watched a good portion of the Utah game from the chain link fence at the MTC looking at this person's big screen! Luckily I was out in the field when the Hawaii debacle took place!

Ha, I swear that guy did that just to tempt the missionaries. I was in the MTC right before you were (May 2001), and he always had the TV going, and the windows wide open.

I was trying to remember what we were trying to watch on that guys TV, and it finally hit me, the NBA playoffs were on while I was in there. Kobe vs Iverson. wow, that seems like a long time ago.



And I think we've officially hijacked this thread. To get it back on topic I'll just say this... I googled brown recluse bite and hit the images link. Wow, that was a huge fear for a while. Those bites get pretty bad.

Maybe the spiderman has lost some yards on his kickoffs, but can he wrap up the returner in a spiderweb? If so good tradeoff I think.
