As for his BYU offer, Pau'u is still very excited about it and talks about his offer and if it happened yesterday.



"Oh man, I'm so stoked," Pau'u said. "I mean, my family and I have been big BYU fans all our lives. My mom says she feels really good about it. She's been praying about it and she says she feels really good about BYU."



That kind of news bodes really well for BYU. When a Tongan mother – or a Samoan mother for that matter – feels good about something, convincing them otherwise is like trying to convince them that the McDonald's dollar menu tastes better than food at a good old-fashioned Polynesian luau. It just isn't going to happen.



Nevertheless, Pau’u is already interested in BYU anyway.



"For me, it's because they allow me to go and serve my mission," Pau'u said. "It's been a big part of my parents raising me and why they really like BYU. In raising me, it's been the number one thing when I grow up and turn 19 to go and serve my mission, then come back and finish up college. That's what I plan to do."



I like how that sounds.

Those comments certainly sound good to me.

Brandon Gurney just stated that Adam Ah-Ching is definitely planning on attending BYU's camp with Pau'u...they're very good friends

Hope those guys make it a package deal at BYU's Junior Day. Would get some momentum going for recruits. Looks to be another really solid class. Just need to add a couple of skill guys now (WR/RB).

Nice article about him on True Blue Cougars - seems like ours to lose given his mission plans, the Indepedence move/ESPN and the emphasis on living the standards at the Y. Hope he can convince his friend Ah-Ching to see the light this week as well as exposing his friend Jherremya Leuta Douyere (6-1, 230 pounds) a running back/outside linebacker.



According to the interview, "the coaches have said they are interested in him and want him to come out and show what he can do.”

Per reports, Butch was the class of hte days competition at LB. Do not know who else attended at who he was up against though, but glad to hear he dominated. HE sounds like a Bronco/BYU style ILB. Hope we get him.

Brandon Gurney tweeted that Butch Pau'u went home from camp early...didn't commit...wanted to talk it over some more with his family. Anyone know the details or what is going on? He apparently had a good camp, showed well and impressed one of our OL commits Brayden Kearsley who he beat once during 1-1 drills.

I believe that he will commit once his HS teammate does. BYU offered the non-LDS kid Butch brought with him to camp, and I was told that the kid was ready to commit on the spot, but the coaches told him to go home and talk it over with his parents. I suspect that they both commit, along with Powell, this week. I think Powell gets offered a well and would be shocked if he isn't. Powell is at camp this week as well. So by Sunday, I think we have 3 more early commits.

These 2 guys are as good as signed, sealed and delivered. The parents are all for it - just need JD's mom to get additional information about what if scenarios - scholarship pulled due to injury, honor code violation, etc. While it may seem like a long decision time, they are being deliberate and methodical. The parents will be solidly behind the decision and strong supporters of the program. Love the aspect that they feel the Y has the best atmosphere and culture to keep their sons on the straight and narrow.

In today's college sports world, BYU is definitely a unique experience. And it's an experience that I'd want my kid to have if he was looking at scholarship offers.



Best of luck to both of them in their decisions.



Anyone know what BYU's policy is on sholarships and injury or honor code violation? Not that it matters as much as it would at a USC where tuition is 20 times the price of BYU.

If you are injured, you keep your schollie. Simple as that. BYU gets hurt players all the time and they stay on schollie while they rehab. If they have to quit football completely, and are no longer on the team, I am not sure what happens, or what programs BYU has in place to provide for those guys. It does not happen often.



As to HC issues, you get booted from school, you lose your schollie while gone. However, most players are told that if they work to return at a set time, the schollie will still be there, unless the "crime" is so severe they are invited to leave. See Davies, Unga, and guys who missed Spring, but can come back Fall if they meet school and Bronco's terms.(Gaines, BRyson, etc).

I believe if an athlete gets hurt and can no longer play, the school can keep them on scholarship without it counting against the cap. This is what I believe happened in bball to Derek Dawes and Garner Meads. They got hurt and couldn't finish their eligibility. BYU "kept" them on scholarship as they finished their degrees, but they were able to replace them on the team with scholarship athletes. I don't know if the amount of time to graduate factored. I.e., it would be much easier to let a guy who has a semester or two left than a guy with three years.

Anyone concerned? Haven't we pulled schollies in the past for this?

On the recruiting front, Pauu said he has three schools in mind for official visits, although no dates have been set yet.



“I want to visit Washington, Colorado and Utah,” Pauu said. “Washington has a great team, and I like how the coaches are recruiting me. They’re always so fired up and they remind me a lot of our staff here at Servite.



“Colorado is a beautiful campus, and I heard great things about the campus. They’re a strong academic school as well. With Utah, it’s a beautiful place as well and I could live out my faith (LDS) pretty easily as well and that’s important. I’m still very solid with BYU and love the school but just want to take some visits to see what else is out there.”
