Saw this little gem on the Deseret News this morning:

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700126705/BYU-sold-out-other-sports-for-footballs-independence.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Doug Robinson, (who rarely has a kind word to say about BYU) is again critisizing BYU for their move to football independence claiming that BYU sold out its other sports in a move that almost certainly will not work for BYU, saying it was all about the money involved and nothing else. Nowhere in the piece of trash he calls an article does he talk about the increased exposure for the school, just that the football team went from winning 10 games a season against regional opponents to winning 6 or 7 on a heavyweight schedule.

I bet the :utard: trolls are just eating that one up.

Frankly, he makes some valid points. I am pretty excited to have an easier time to watch BYU football but it is not going to be as easy to bust the BCS in football as it would have been in the MWC. He is 100% right about the other sports. The WCC is a step down. They are a 1 bid conference and if you don't win the conference tourney, you are out. St Mary's was in the top 25 all year, lost to Gonzaga in the conference tourney and they don't get in the NCAA tourney. The MWC was a 3 bid league last year. This article, while a bit difficult to swallow and being negative, is pretty close to what reality is as a football independant.

one thing about the WCC vs. MWC in terms of bids. Take BYU's bids out of the MWC and add them to the WCC bids and they end up both being 2-3 bid leagues. 8)

Agree with ungoy, Robinson and frdbtr are still missing the point. Exposure, exposure, exposure is the mpdriving factor, not money as he repeatedly states. Even if it were about money, football carries all other sports except mens bball. This move keeps all sports alive at BYU as their financial independence from tithing funds is also critical to keeping them going. Mens bball is really the only loser here, and it's not losing much. What we give up in high profile we hopefully make up for in loss of classlessness among our competition - we'll see. But to claim BYU sold out it's other programs for football independence is an old, naive argument. In the long run BYU and the church will be better off for this move.

Thankfully the world is not made up of individuals that just point out fault, but that also provide a solution. How enjoyable is an article that points out your faults and offers no solution?

It would have been a good setup if the MWC had not gone stupid and just allowed BYU to go indy in football for the reason of exposure. If they were, in the end, amiable to accepting Hawaii for football only, it seems like it would have been a no-brainer to them. What did they gain by denying BYU that and turning on them? I don't see one benefit other than they get to say, "na na na na na, you can't play with us." Honestly, if someone can show me where they have benefited from acting like they have PMS and just let us exit the door, let them point it out to me.

I'd rather play in the MWC than the WCC. I think initially all the teams and fans are way more accepting that the MWC has been, but it has been pointed out, if we go in there and dominate year after year, they'll probably come to hate us as well.

I still think it was better to pursue this course than stay at status quo.

I agree its a step down, but with BYU they are a 3 bid team. St Mary's had a better RPI than at least 8 teams that got in this year, and they were in the sweet 16 just last year. True, the rest of the is awful, though I was surprised that they had four 20-win teams.

I definitely disagree with his opinion about the football team. There's no way we only win 6-7 games a year, even with tougher schedules than we're used to. Our overall depth and talent is about as good as its ever been and will keep getting better with more wins and more exposure.

My question is if basketball got such a bad deal in this move to independence then how come Rose stayed? If this move to the WCC will be so destructive to mens basketball then how come, when asked about the move to the WCC, Rose commented
"Those are all things that I didn't want to leave behind; I want to be able to pursue that and see where that could actually take our program...I think it's a great opportunity for the exposure of our university and especially the BYU Basketball program."

People seem to forget that this exposure we're talking about is not just confined to football. Basketball will also be on ESPN. Basketball will also be on BYUtv. Anybody recall the Fresno State game this year? The MTN chose not to air it and also prevented BYUtv from airing it. So we had a home game this year that was a TV blackout. You think Rose was satisfied with that?

I love how people start judging the independence thing before we've played ANY sports with our new arrangement. How about we let it play out ON THE FIELD? Could end up being the biggest mistake in BYU history or lead to the greatest era in BYU sports. In any case we'll be able to see dozens more emissions for BYU sports.

Keep in mind that the MWC was a three bid conf because of conf RPI. BYU moving to the WCC has jumped that conf's RPI way up and dropped the MWC's rpi. So next year you may only see two teams from the MWC and three from the WCC.

I am not agreeing with Robinson that this is all about the money, I am agreeing with some of his points about the other sports not being in as good a position then they were in the MWC. I have been worried about Bball since the move. I guess we will see if BYU imediately makes the WCC into a 2 bid league when they have never been in the past but right now, BYU could win 30 games next year and lose to someone in the WCC tourney and end up in the NIT.

2009 tourny WCC 2-BIDS Zags, St. Mary's. . . they have a history of putting multiple teams in the dance. Besides this isn't the BCS the WCC has an AUTOMATIC bid. We'll be fine.

I think it was a lateral move. We all think of teh MWC as it is now constituted, and those days are over. SOrry, but no BYU, no Utah is hoops hurts the league a lot. No BYU, no Utah, and no TCU kills in football, even with Boise coming in. Name hte other sports you all really pay attention to now.

WIth BYU in the WCC--which has an ESPN deal that got renewed and improved with the additiona of BYU, the WCC becomes a better league. WHat does the MWC have now? SDSU and UNM? OK, How long will SDSU Stay good? And name the last time UNM really rocked? The MWC has better venues to play in, but do not mistake larger stadiums for better teams. With the additiona of BYU in teh WCC< and the subtraction of BYU and Utah, the WCC with be an equal or better league for men's hoops. Oh--and they have an auto bid. THe WCC has not hurt Gonzaga and it will not hurt us.

As to the other sports, many are just fine as well because they are in leagues with an auto bid as well. ANd some even go to tougher competition--such as women's soccer where the WCC is an awesome league. Other than women's softball, who really got hurt? Factor in the overall $$ and exposure increase, I;d say it is a win-win across the board for all sports.

Going independent in football isn't about money as much as it is about getting more exposure for BYU and the church through athletics. A recent post on cougarboard did a great job of explaining why BYU isn't as focused on revenue as most people seem to believe. Yes money is needed to run the athletic programs but BYU's top priority isn't to maximize revenue but to maximize exposure. We are all well aware of how the MWC's TV deal wasn't allowing BYU to achieve the exposure that it desired. Here is a link to the post - http://www.cougarboard.com/board/message.html?id=6750580" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Frankly, I am in "wait and see" mode. Like I said above, I am excited to be able to watch BYU football streaming from ESPN or on BYUtv. If BYU loses in the Conference tourney next year in BB and gets stiffed for the NCAA tourney, I will be pissed.

Not only has the WCC been a multiple-bid league in past years, they have done much more once in the big dance. We're still going to get more money (and more exposure!) for basketball and football getting more money and more exposure is good for all sports at BYU, because it is THE money sport. Something about a rising tide...

St. Mary's didn't get snubbed because the WCC is a 1 bid league. They got left out because they lost to San Diego, Utah State at home, and Gonzaga at home all in a 1 week stretch late in the season. If BYU had lost to TCU, Wyoming, and San Diego State all in a row, they would have probably been a bubble team too.

While I don't think it is a step up, I see BYU having a good run similar to Gonzaga in the WCC.

Well, if we lose in the conf tourney in bball, then that just means another program is more deserving to be there than we are...

I doubt we go 25+ wins and get stiffed for the tourney. Just don't see that happening.
B
Brayden Green
And St Mary's not dancing had more to do with losing 5 out of their last 8 regular season games, than not winning the conference. As has been pointed out, the WCC sent St Marys and Gonzaga 2 years ago.

They were not top 25 all year as some have eluded.
