Dropped Passes, over throws

Not much has been said about this in 2011 - but Spring game had lots of drops hurting at least 3 QBs. Nelson had a few overthrows miss. Three pass interference calls took potential yards from Heaps. Hopefully Nelson convinced Mars he is better than Lark at this point even running the BYU offense. It is really hard to make too much from Spring ball, but if the offense gets a little more in synch it sounds like they could be much more impressive than they were today. The defense sounds pretty solid.

Were Nelson's overthows on 5-yard passes? I've heard he can't throw more than 10 yards.

I'll say this about Nelson, His 73 yard TD strike was a thing of beauty. There were some dropped balls, but I'm sure that weather played a factor in that. It was cold and wet out there. Hardly ideal conditions for big play football.

Hey props to Riley. He looked much improved. He stuck with the offense. He is molding/reinventing himself to the Offensive scheme, namely going under center; he certainly has better timing (which is critical for his average velocity) on his passes; and it didnt appear that he was resorting to his default of tuck, duck, and run. Yes, Riley that cant be a staple, it has to be sprinkled in.

McKay Jacobsen had a nice day. 4 catches iirc. Apo dropped one and did not get many catches, but he drew at least two pass interference calls on deep balls. If no PI - he probably gets some big catches.

Please tell me Bronco and Doman aren't dumb enough to play Nelson this year.

Not in the same capacity they were planning last year. But they also aren't stupid enough to realize there may not be a few (3-5) plays/situations a game where Riley couldn't help the team. This is exactly how you'll be able to tell the true fans with football knowledge from the non-knowledgeable fan who basis their opinion off of emotion.



Nelson looked great in the Spring game. He's definitely a BYU QB. But he's clearly the 2nd best QB on the team. What more needs to be said.

I think it would be funny if on the second drive of next year, Nelson got put in for the first play... There would be a collective, WHAT!!!!? And then Heaps could come back in...

Someone on the Spring Game thread posted tha they hated to see DiLuigi getting the ball in running situations - but that was before he took it for a long TD run iirc.



Anyway - my theme is that we still had too many drops - more than I expected - still had some overthrows - but we have someting we did not have after week 2 1/2 last year - if we ever had it at all last year - an experienced backup QB with decent abilities. I hope we do not need it - but if we do need it - we have it.



Hopefully the offense will tighten up in Fall camp and drops and overthrows will be fewer.



Let's quit bagging on players like Jacobsen, DiLuigi, Nelson, Kariya, Chambers, Uale, Lark, Munns, or any others. Even Ross Apo has dropped a pass now and has been run down from behind by a white guy. They are all human. They all add value to this team and perhaps we will have more depth than the basketball team had if we catch a few bad breaks during the season or in future seasons.

Actually I think someone said they don't want to see diluigi running the sweep, big difference. I'm not sure where you are getting a sense that all those guys you listed are getting bagged on? In fact, why are you making an issue about drops and overthrows when it clearly has not been the issue this year that it was last? I have not been to practices, and it sounds like you haven't either, so it surprises me that you are getting such a different sense of what is going on with the team this spring. The only time I have heard about drops has been in the spring game when it was cold and rainy - did I miss something?

Because they have been bagged on last year and even this year by a few people. And I read more into the DiLuigi comment than you did, but there are fans who want more Juice and see JJ and Kariya as being in the way of that. But even if you take it literally on that quote - like you did - how long do you think it would be before opponents could figure out that he is never going to run the sweep and have one less thing to worry about when he is in. Or read the full comment and notice the point after the sentence you paraphrased and notice that the poster commented beyond that about wishing BYU would keep him mainly for passes out of the backfield. Then defenses could really focus on what to do. I have seen posts bagging on every player I listed above already this year. Luckily it is a minority of posters so far this year.



Re the drops, I posted before the Spring game that coverage of Spring has been spotty at best and wondered if there have been drops this year. I have not seen a report one way or the other. Then I saw a TBS play by play report of the Spring game and saw more than I would have expected even though I think a lot of uncatchable balls or barely catchable balls got called drops in games I watched last year. I have no idea if the so called drops in the Spring game were barely catchable or pure drops. I wish there were reports so I would know. But clearly, the offense sputtered getting the ball into the end zone. Ironically, last year, posters clammored that Cahoon would not allow any drops and that any ball you could get one hand on should be caught. Now you are making wet weather excuses. Geez - I hope we don't get bad weather in November, December, or January - heaven forbid.
